Frontier history is woven into the fabric of Sheridan’s identity. Reminders of a hardscrabble, bygone era are found etched into the wall of historic buildings, whispered about along century-old mountain trails, and recounted at interpretive sites from the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument to Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site. Sheridan County has played host, sometimes unwillingly, often unwittingly, to cadres of nefarious and notorious outlaws like Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, Big Nose George, and even the outlaw Jesse James.
Icons, too, have staked claims at the base of the Bighorn Mountains, with the most celebrated of all being none other than William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody. Yet it is a little-known fact that Sheridan has also hosted some of history’s most refined, dignified, and celebrated individuals, including none other than Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Many folks would whither under the spotlight and intense scrutiny. Some would seek to decompress in their limited down time with a low-stakes extracurricular activity. Running, maybe. Skiing, possibly. Sheridan’s Whitney Wickes has done both and has found plenty of success as a triathlete and professional skier. But for as long as she can remember, Whitney’s true passion has been horses. Whitney unwinds, if you can call it that, by competing in the high-stakes, high-stress world of equestrian show jumping – all while managing a growing business empire.

Leather craft is inextricably linked to the culture of Wyoming and is woven into the very fabric of Sheridan’s identity. There have been saddle makers and leather toolers in Bighorn Mountain Country for as long as there have been cowboys chasing sunsets across the frontier, yet leather craft as art is something of a modern phenomenon, one born of the fusion of rangeland utility and upcountry escapism.
King’s Saddlery, established by cowboy and leather crafter Don King in 1947, remains an iconic cowboy emporium and the foremost tack and leather shop in the west, and has become a major destination for visitors – indeed, King’s Ropes hats have become something of a ubiquitous hallmark of a trip to Sheridan County. King himself is considered one of the finest leather crafters to ever ply his trade in Wyoming, and his namesake museum, located at the saddlery, features some of his most spectacular pieces – along with work by masters Bill Gardner and Chester Hape. When Queen Elizabeth visited Sheridan in 1989, she made a trip to King’s: what she saw there then was what you will find today; handmade ropes, utilitarian tack, bits, spurs, belt knives and hats set out alongside some of the most spectacularly carved saddles ever made – not to mention hand-tooled wallets, belts, bags, vases, and much more.
Stamping, tooling, and carving traditions are upheld today by the likes of Barry and Ryan King (Don King’s grandsons), as well as James F Jackson of the Brinton Museum. James Jackson, known in the leather trade as Jim, was named a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2019, and was awarded a Wyoming Governor’s Arts Award the same year. The son of saddle maker Edward Jackson, Jim was stamping leather in Ernst’s Saddlery by the age of 14. He began hand-stamping belts at King’s in 1974, later earned degrees in Fine Art at the

A Message for Rick Geisler
This one goes out to our friend Rick Geisler.
Many of you have heard by now that on August 28th Rick was involved in an accident while roping. Since that time he has been laid up in the hospital in Billings, MT.
Most folks around here know Rick Geisler and the Band of Outlaws - but they may not know that Rick is a cowboy through and through. He's a gentleman, a great friend, and someone who is always willing to lend a hand to others. He's assisted our team on a number of projects through the years and he's never asked for a single thing.
So we're asking that you think of Rick, and to send him a note when you can. We hope to see this cowboy back on his feet soon.
