Rainfall chances will stick with us for the foreseeable future with multiple shots for excessive rainfall as denoted by the WPC. With heavy rainfall falling on an already saturated ground, the chances for further flooding are elevated.

The more you know! ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”

Many people ask if Lake Superior has a tide. The answer: no. While Lake Superior does not have tides, it does have seiches. A seiche (French for โ€œsway back and forthโ€) is the rising and lowering of water levels in an enclosed body of water, like a lake. Seiches are caused by high winds and drastic changes in atmospheric pressure. The high winds push the water to one side of the lake. Once the wind subsides, the water rebounds, heading back towards the opposite side of the lake. This triggers the oscillation of the water. This movement can last minutes, hours, or even days.

Most of the time, seiches on Lake Superior are small and do little to disrupt shipping. However, large seiches can cause significant damage. For example, in Two Harbors, MN in 1998, a seiche caused hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage to ships and loading equipment at the Duluth Missabe Iron Range Railway Company dock. In 1995, a seiche caused water levels to rise and drop by three feet in fifteen minutes! In addition, seiches can be accompanied by strong rip currents, which can pull people away from the shore and pose a drowning hazard.

While seiches have the potential for danger, they do serve an important purpose in the lakeโ€™s ecosystem. The vigorous movement of the water stirs up nutrients in deeper areas of the lake and redistributes them. When the nutrients are brought closer to the surface, algae are able to use them and continue the process of photosynthesis.
