My Colorado Hemma We've sold our loved home called the Dairy and are on a new journey. Stay tuned for updates!

This page houses memories from The Dairy, our loved mountain home and now our new chapter, a remodeling project in Denver - a Scandinavian refresh of a 1980's family home. Borta bra, men hemma bäst. = Away is good, but home is best.

The Dairy, our log cabin vacation property located in Silverthorne, Colorado is more than a cabin, it's a comfortable mountain retreat.

Enjoy our 2,800 square foot pine log home with views of mountains and a lake, stainless kitchen appliances, our private outdoor hot tub, two fireplaces, peeled pine beds with down filled berber fleece comforters to snuggle in, hardwood flooring, and our huge deck overlooking our natural yard.

More upstairs floor progress + plus a before pic for reference.

The sander is doing his thing this morning and will confirm the color this weekend as well… Interesting, pickling is not well known I guess here in Colorado, but adding a white tint to the stain is known… I’ll share the color once confirmed. No question we’re keeping them light. I’m so pleased so far! (Can you tell how much fun I’m having? 😊)

So a bit of a surprise… We thought we had white oak floors that we were adding to, but turns out the few rooms that had the hardwood had red oak. Red oak is easier to secure so my contractor was able to swap out the woods and they are being installed over the next few days.

I’m leaning toward pickling the floors. What do you think?

Pickling red oak floors is a finishing technique that imparts a whitewashed or bleached appearance to the wood, softening its natural reddish tones and highlighting the grain. This method is popular for achieving a lighter, more contemporary look in interior spaces.

My “Japandi” style is coming through. Check out my primary bedroom doors that arrived over the weekend. Haven’t decided if we’ll match the floor or stain them dark. A definite is that we plan to keep the face of these doors free of all hardware so we will use ball catch hardware on the top of the doors and interior floor bolts for privacy.

Who knew a stove hood could be so exciting? Apparently, I did! I had a custom hood made for my 48-inch gas stove, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. I wanted a sleek, simple design, so we’re planning to stain this gorgeous piece and flank it with white tile—maybe even add some floating shelves for a clean, modern touch.

The best part? The company I ordered from made the process so much fun, sending me progress updates along the way.

The last picture is an inspiration photo - so you have to use your imagination - stain it a pretty color and flank it with floating shelves with creamy Italian tile that goes to the ceiling.

Can’t wait to see it come to life once mounted.

Denver’s beautiful weather has my painting crew eager to get started on the exterior refresh! But first, we have to navigate the HOA and architectural committee to ensure the colors are approved—no small feat given the many restrictions on what can and can’t be done.

While I love embracing my Swedish heritage, the current yellow house with a blue door and white trim just isn’t my style. Interestingly, yellow is technically a forbidden color in our HOA’s palette—yet here we are!

I’ve picked up my Aunt Darlene’s love of Benjamin Moore paint and have submitted to the architectural committee. Here are my requested colors and a look at the house as it stands today.

The “after” image is not accurate, but it gives you a directional sense of what I hope to do. Additionally, I’ve requested permission to frame out the Corinthian columns into squared off columns.

Stay tuned for the update!

Big strides made at the new house...

- skim coat and sanding of all walls and ceiling are done
- "Juliet" opening is closed
- mini bar is closed in
- kitchen wall knocked out
- island one is out
- wooden railings are down
- belly band and trim are out
- patio walls removed

Pictures are kind of dark based on time of day and so many lights uninstalled. For comparison, I threw in some of the before pictures. Next week we start on adding wood floors wherever we don't currently have them.

I'm learning something about myself. I'm drawn to Wabi-Sabi Design as much as I'm drawn to Scandinavian (simple+functional+cozy), Hygge (Danish coziness), Japandi (Japanese + Scandinavian) and Boho (relaxed, global and artistic) design styles.

While I left all my big furniture at the cabin, I didn't leave my decor. So all my collected thrift store, travel and imperfect antiques will find a place in this new place of mine.

What is Wabi-Sabi Design?
https://www.robern.com/article/wabi-sabi-style

In home design, wabi-sabi is a Japanese aesthetic that embraces imperfection, natural materials, and simplicity to create a space that feels warm, lived-in, and harmonious. It celebrates the beauty of imperfection, aging, and authenticity.

Key Principles of Wabi-Sabi in Home Design:

- Natural Materials – Use wood, stone, linen, clay, and other organic materials that develop character over time.
- Imperfection & Asymmetry – Embrace handmade pottery, uneven textures, and aged furniture with visible wear.
- Minimalism with Warmth – Simplicity is key, but not stark minimalism—there’s a focus on comfort and serenity.
- Earthy, Muted Colors – Think soft whites, greys, warm browns, and nature-inspired tones.
- Aging Gracefully – Instead of replacing things, appreciate the patina of old wood, chipped ceramics, and weathered textiles.
- Connection to Nature – Incorporate plants, natural light, and open spaces that blend indoor and outdoor elements.

Examples of Wabi-Sabi Design:

- A rustic wooden table with visible knots and grain.
- Handmade ceramic dishes with slight irregularities.
- Linen curtains that soften natural light.

A minimalist living space with textured walls and vintage finds.
Wabi-sabi is about comfort, authenticity, and finding beauty in everyday imperfection, creating a home that feels peaceful, natural, and timeless.

PSA for Denver area friends:
50% off sale at Rare Finds this weekend!

When I sold the cabin, I sold it furnished so essentially I have no furniture for the new home. I set aside a budget and am watching for sales and interesting pieces between now and when I move in. Today I scored.

The crew is rocking. Check out the weird 1980's "Juliet" opening from the primary bedroom into the front room below. It is now closed up and feels so much more appropriate. Who wants a weird barn door/magazine rack that opens from your main bedroom into the living room? Not me.

Upstairs lighting ordered. Keeping everything light and breezy. Primary bedroom and one of the three guest rooms will have Minka Aire fans with lighting... love Minka fans. I've used them in 3 homes and they are quiet and beautiful. Fell in love with the Japanese Yellow Travertine Ceiling Lamp. Can't wait to see how they all look!

It's starting! My dream of turning a 1980s family home into a modern Scandinavian retreat—designed for indoor-outdoor living and effortless entertaining—is underway!

It seems like it has taken a long time, but hopefully well worth it for a solid plan. The demo and new roof are in motion!

-New roof
-New exterior paint
-New landscaping
-New case, base and hardwood floors
-Skim coating all surfaces plus a complete interior paint job
-New fixtures
-New railings
-Two new 3 panel sliding doors (taking out one exterior wall)
-Doubling the kitchen size, new counters, adding an island .. and a few other special touches

I turned down a talented design team because I realized it would be taking away so much of my joy. Let's hope I don't regret that decision!

I'm grateful for a solid GC and crew who seem to be on this joy-ride with me.

It's a big week... demo starts tomorrow and the new roof goes on this Thursday!

For folks looking for the mountain vacation property - The Dairy (mycoloradologcabin), we've sold the cabin and are now moving into a new chapter. You're welcome to leave - or please stay if you'd like to see a home transform over the upcoming months and years.

Update! I've found and purchased a home in Centennial, Colorado that I'll be renovating (with a trusted crew) over the upcoming months. It will be the biggest project that I've taken on to date and while a little intimidating, really exciting.

For a little tease, the red brick photo below is a front room in the new house and the initial reason I fell in love with the property. i love the soaring windows and the floor to ceiling brick fireplace. The white fireplace photo is an "inspiration" photo and the direction we'll be taking the house... going from 1983 into a modern white Scandinavian home built for entertaining.

I'll be posting progress here, my site that used to be dedicated to the Dairy. I just couldn't turn off this site with all the memories captured over the years. So, it has been renamed "My Colorado Hemma" (Hemma = Home in Swedish) and will hopefully fill up with posts showing a home evolving from dated to fresh and with new memories of friends and family visiting for a dinner or a weekend - or even longer!

Here we go into my new chapter!
