Going home the other day and I see this youngster crossing the street. It's been a mild winter so far and the moose population should be doing better than last year. We are expecting snow so that could change things up.

I want to announce this past week, Kenai Peninsula Road Trip Fishing Tours had it's first 2 clients of the season. They were also the last. I've been accused in the past of thinking with my heart instead of my head. Guilty as charged. Seeing a smile on people's face, and getting those first big reviews, led me to make some poor decisions. Starting a business is hard work. Starting a business from scratch without a loan, backing, or legal advice is even harder. I'm not making excuses, I thought I had all my bases covered. I was wrong. I'd like to thank the couple who brought these items to my attention and educated me. I still have questions (lots of them), but now I have a resource who is willing to answer those questions. You will always have my respect. By the time I get the final permit, this season will most likely be over. If I'm able, I'll be back next year and in 100% compliance. My goal of providing a memorable and affordable fishing experience for the working man has not changed. Until then, the fishing I do will be strictly with family and friends and not business related in any way. I need to never forget, success is not measured by the amount of fish you catch. You are going to have good days and bad days. People are going to get upset when they don't get what they think they paid for. It's part of the business.

According to https://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=pinksalmon.main, Pink Salmon are smaller than other salmon, live up to 2 years, and researchers have been able to genetically identify odd and even year humpys that return to spawn where they were born.
These 3–5 pounds fish live in the ocean for about a year and half before they return to where they were born to spawn in the summer months. They do not eat on their journey back to spawn, and the males grow humps on their backs, their heads change shape and have large teeth, which they use to fight other males. Once they reach their spawning grounds, the females make their nests with their bodies in gravel bottoms to lay their eggs, and the males go around fertilizing as many nests as they can. Females make more than one nest, covering up the other nests in the process. Groups of nests are called redd. The females stay to protect their nests until they die. The baby pink salmon are born later in the winter or spring and stay under gravel surviving off their yolk sac until they are big enough to return to the ocean.

The sockeye are in! Getting limits of 6 in as little as 45 minutes. Surf fishing has also been good the last couple outings, although we've only caught sharks.

Best laid plans of mice and men. Wanted to get "a couple" of things done today before heading to the river for some sockeye. Before I knew it, it's 9:30 p.m. and I'm still not done. Tomorrow is another day.

Last evenings total 4 sharks, a cod, and a flounder. Not bad for a cheechako.

We're ready for business. Catching hatchery kings on the Kasilof River. May soon be adding a boat where sightseeing tours can go along and watch spot prawns being caught and go clam digging. The Russian River will be opening for sockeye in a couple days. Things are going to get HOT this summer!
