Somerset, KY is situated on the northeastern edge of Lake Cumberland just west of the Daniel Boone National Forest, and as you can imagine, is known for its abundance of outdoor recreation including boating, hiking and even a local vineyard offering a different taste of Kentucky. Somerset is not without history either. A significant Civil War battle was fought at Mill Springs (now "Nancy") about 8 miles west of Somerset, and a museum exists at the site of the battle. Also, Jesse James and his gang was said to have came to Somerset from Mt. Vernon with the intention of robbing the First National Bank but were frightened away when they saw a number of young men, armed with shot guns, standing around the square. The youths had gathered on the square to go bird hunting and knew nothing about the plans of Jesse James. The gang went on to Columbia and held up a bank there. City events include the Master Musician's Festival each July, as well as Somernites Cruise -- the largest classic car show in the Bluegrass State. The Somerset-Pulaski County Convention and Visitors Bureau is available anytime for questions or comments about the lake and welcomes the opportunity to help you plan your perfect vacation getaway to Lake Cumberland. You deserve a break—and we hope you get the R&R you’ve been looking for at Lake Cumberland!
