Lots of people have reached out to me about Giant Hogweed due to this article. I have never seen it on any of my properties, or anywhere I have hiked. That doesn’t mean it’s not here. According to it is present on long island. This plant is VERY large with large hollow stems with purple blotches on it. If you think you see it, stay away, take pictures of leaves, stems and flowers if present and send them to Nysdec. I will put a link to their website in the comments. Be safe and aware when outside .

May is American Wetlands month. Ways you can help protect our wetlands. Remove invasive species. Doing this allows dormant seeds that have been sitting there for years. to get sunlight and germinate. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen this happen. Mostly with Japanese knotweed and phragmites. Don’t have your lawn running right up to the water! All the fertilizers and chemicals you put on your lawn are going right into our wetlands. instead, plant a buffer of native species. These plants don’t need to be fed, watered or sprayed with harmful insecticides. In no time they will be teeming with wildlife. These buffers also protect your property by absorbing storm water. Note that depending on your municipality you may need permits to plant and remove. Posting a few articles in comments.

so many people are asking about when their gardens are going in or when the containers are getting planted. This cold spring means plants are slow to grow. Many perennials are still just plugs in pots with little to no root system and it’s still too cold for annuals. Be patient. before you know, it will be 90 and we will be wishing for fall! Savor this season of new beginnings.

Removing invasive species gives natives a chance to come in. A few years ago this was Phragmite with a small patch of skunk cabbage. Now it’s virtually all skunks, with a little bit of phragmite that we cut four times a year. It’s such an amazing plant too! see article in comments.

I hear that hummingbirds are back on the east end. One way to help these guys out is to put out feeders for them until there are more flowers blooming. To make mix one part white sugar ( not organic, not brown) to four parts water. I heat on stove till the sugar is disolved and let cool before putting in feeders. It is very important that feeders get cleaned well with hot water and a bottle brush at least once a week and more in hot weather. The mixture can grow mold and this causes the hummers tongues to swell. They can’t eat and will starve to death. It’s a lot of responsibility and always better to plant to attract them. If you are a weekly maintenance client and want us to do this for you, reach out to me and I will get you set up! photo credit for all of these pics

Have you seen this plant on your property? It’s Lesser Celadine and as you can see from the pictures, it’s extremely invasive. I have seen it this year in almost every one of my gardens. It needs to be removed, by its roots and left in black plastic bags till it is completely dead. If can be killed with repeated applications of horticultural vinegar, but if it’s in your garden, mixed with desirables, it needs to be dug by hand. This plants foliage will disappear soon but the roots, bulblets ,will spread and next year there will be more!

On the subject of Amaryllis, the flowers get so heavy that they can fall and break the stem. Staking the helps prevent this. Put a stake as close to the stem as you can on the opposite side of the direction the stem is leaning. Wrap your tie around the stake and gently pull the stem towards the stake. Don’t force it if you feel resistance! Tie loosely and in a few days tighten it a little more. These flowers are easy to grow, come in many colors and shapes and with a little care, come back year after year! Enjoy these winter beauties!

Amaryllis, not just for Christmas! I’ve been giving Amaryllis as gifts for years. Of course, I’m so busy working in the fall they get potted up late. I call them Valentines Amarilis! Sure enough, I’ve been getting pics this week of the gifts! I actually think they’re better now, there’s so much going on at Christmas time and February can be dreary. Next year give this bulb a try, you won’t regret it!
