First US Senator to give birth while in office!
❤💪🤰👶🏽
Congratulations to Tammy Duckworth who just became the first US Senator in history to give birth while in office! Duckworth and her husband, Bryan Bowlsbey, named their daughter Maile Pearl after her husband's great aunt, Pearl Bowlsbey Johnson, who served as an Army nurse during World War II. Since she began representing Illinois in Congress, first in the House and now in the Senate, Duckworth has said that her experiences as a working mother give her an important -- and underrepresented -- perspective in the halls of Congress. She has often sponsored or co-sponsored legislation to help parents and families, including bills focused on affordable child care, paid parental leave and other infant and maternal health issues.
Duckworth spoke to this topic in an announcement about today's birth: "Parenthood isn't just a women's issue, it's an economic issue and one that affects all parents — men and women alike. As tough as juggling the demands of motherhood and being a Senator can be, I'm hardly alone or unique as a working parent, and my children only make me more committed to doing my job and standing up for hardworking families everywhere."
Best wishes to Senator Tammy Duckworth and her new Mighty Girl Maile Pearl!
