Deciphering Dreams

Deciphering Dreams Deciphering Dreams opens a pathway to a deeper understanding of many dreamscapes including vivid childhood dreams, recurring dreams and nightmares.

Dreams are a form of language bringing awareness to our hidden desires and creative dreams. Virginia Carlson has been aware of the messages in dreams since childhood. As a mother of four, combined with her education in Psychology and Sociology she has a solid foundation for understanding creativity of the mind. As a professional in-home counselor for individuals, families, and young children, she

has been provided with a broad spectrum of hands on experience. Her passion for helping others coupled with her unique approach, have attracted the enthusiasm and support of local and distant communities. She is a Master level energy worker, prolific writer, and seasoned presenter. Deciphering Dreams with Virginia Carlson explores day dreams; waking dreams; recurring dreams; prophetic dreams; past life recollections; universal symbols; and dreams appearing to be positively silly and preposterous. She uses her intuition as well as established public research to assist in understanding the entire spectrum of dreams. By using dream time language, desires or repressions come to the surface. Dream interpretation is about the dreamer, based on the dreamer’s own experiences, and uniquely linking the dreamer’s body, mind and spirit. Unraveling a dream with Virginia Carlson is a fun and exciting experience. A simple technique to unlock the dreams of the dreamer is shared with each participant through the interpretation process. "I think we dream so we don't have to be apart for so long.
If we are in each other's dreams, we can be together all the time."
Winnie-the-Pooh

As we toss and turn, waiting for sleep to come to us, our brain spins the wheel to select a dream content from various subjects. The wheel might stop at love, loneliness, fear, dissolution, fantasy, violence or illusion.

Emotional aspects float into our dreams and symbols are readily present. Sometimes it is not the actual person in the dream, but rather what that person represents. Violence can be our repressed anger or fear. A dream can be a slight pause out of reality, a reprieve floating in the midst of clouds or stars.

Not only does the singular dream hold important content, but when we track daily dreams by the week or month, an unseen pattern emerges. An overall theme links the daily dreams and we gain insight to an expanding picture. Dreams impact our lives whether we recall them or not.

Dream time is just as important to me as waking time. It is through the creativity of dreams that a lesson becomes so obvious, one can no longer ignore it. It is important to maintain a sense of humor rather than be startled or offended.

Currently, I had three individual dreams that were very aligned to the reality in my life. What was interesting, to me, the characters were scrambled, interacting in the wrong time frame. What suddenly became apparent was the tendency to make the same choices. The appearance and surrounding changed, but the shallowness of character remained.

It is easy to distinguish between collective dreams and my own. If I tap into the collective, the timing is faster, the elements more harsh, and the desire to disconnect stronger. These examples of course are in tune with my waking dreams. My tendencies have grown to be more withdrawn and the extended world more harmful.

As a young child, I experienced recurring dreams. To better understand them, I learned to project them on an imaginary movie screen. Outside of the dream, I could observe using fast forward or choosing slow motion. I grew adept at recognizing symbols and learned to untangle the message behind the dream.

It wasn't until I had children of my own that I began to help others with their dreamscapes. It was amazing how much a person could learn about repressed feelings or fears. Most people were not especially aware of the depth attached to a dream nor were they prepared for the confusion between the sense of reality in the dream.

Through the discipline of meditation, one learns how to be present and allow thoughts to float across a screen. Both visualization and meditation practices allow us the ability to be somewhat 'out of body' with spiritual imagery. Therefore, today, I can be the essence of calm up on the screen, while watching my human self participate in an earthly story with birth and death. The non-physical presence becomes my reality ... connected with all behind the scenes.

Perhaps we are all being impacted by the disruption in the world today. Many of us are having dreams of chaos and sometimes violence. The fears we repress, especially unconsciously, often come out in the dream time.

I have tried to make sense out of a few distorted dreams of my own. The material was not what I would usually experience and it puzzled me.

We can look to the meanings of symbols, and examine challenges in our lives, but sometimes dreams consist of the collective energy .... we may dream it but it isn't really ours .... it is just passing through.

If, on the other hand, there is disturbing content, and there is a sense of personal message, work with it. Break it down and look for the underlying meaning.

Remember that our dreams are best remembered first thing of the morning. If we can create a shorthand and capture the main theme, we will be more apt to recall more.

A few months have passed by since I last commented on dreams. What words I shared in April, remain true of today if not more so.

I personally seem to have gone through stages beginning with collective conscious wreaking havoc at night. After these invasions ceased, patterns of relationships filled night time space.

My pattern for relationships has grown very apparent to me and the issues I have stare glaringly at me. For years I have worked on them and have reaped the rewards of correcting what leads me amuck. So I was quite surprised that these relationship dreams had once again returned.

Examining these dreams is like looking at one of those pages telling you to identify the first animal you see or what is the first word you see. I must be missing something or these particular dreams would not be presenting themselves once again. What am I not seeing?

I have walked in nature looking for resolve and sat in meditation, and neither seems to disclose underlying truths. I have journaled hoping to innocently stumble across an insight, but no such thing happened. I have finally resorted to making collages, hoping a new arrangement will settle my soul.

Deciphering Dreams has become more challenging with the current disruption in everyone's lives. Astrologically, we can learn about the collective consciousness and the alignment of planets that are contributing to our anxiety and fears. As we repress or avoid our feelings, they stream into our dreams.

Our current dreams may have shifted in pattern ... in time lapse ... surroundings ... relationships. Themes may be more confusing than ever. Simply waking up without clarity about our dream, we may feel every snip of disconnecting.

It would be wise for everyone to spend 15 minutes just prior to bed, jotting down incomplete resolution or understanding of the day. Express what loiters using just one word. Writing can be fragmented and not a perfect piece. It can be a helpful dumping ground!

"I wondered, what are dreams made of?
Are they stardust and galaxies?
Are they tendrils of existence
Reaching inwards from eternity?
Justin Wetch

There are a few dreams lingering long after the day is over. These nocturnal happenings can reflect our lives supporting our good or reflecting our doubts. Either way, the dream can repeat itself of just hang over our imaginations hoping we will somehow understand.

There are dreams that I shall never forget by choice and there are dreams I have never been able to dismiss. Not all visualizations in the night are pretty, but they all do reflect a matter of importance. To take a dream at surface level is like reading the cover of a book. As we discard this first layer of information, the true message is lost to us.

Dreams are mesmerizing when we take the time to understand them and begin to track the significant pattern developing from night to night and week to week. Dreamwork is a language to be learned which will uncover elements we hide from our lovely selves.

DECIPHERING DREAMS recognizes that as we transition from one season to another, our senses also change. We crave different food, dress slightly differently, and shift our interests and routines.

DECIPHERING DREAMS has been receiving reader's dreams reflecting angry men, police presence, and even wild animals. These symbols are simply reflecting fears that we have repressed.

Police, robbers, or attackers are symbols showing us how unprotected we feel and rarely premonitions of the near future. Take energy away from the fear and invest the energy into making the self feel safe.

Most importantly, sit quietly and let thoughts surface. Listen to your inner voice. Where are you feeling out of control? When do you feel powerless? How can transition or change be made more comfortable?

DECIPHERING DREAMS welcomes input on the posted page or message me in private. Thank you!

Dreams reflect what we avoid in daily life. Our emotions take on different symbols or become a character rather than a real life person. This happens so we may be a bit more objective in hopes we will see a bit more clearly. Activities might be exaggerated simply to prove a point. A situation might be minimized so we can more easily detect the heart of the matter.

If we experience a dream that does not resonate with us, still write it down. At times, when we revisit the information, it may appear more transparent. Continue to look at it with new eyes until the intent dawns upon us.

If you record dreams regularly, you will notice a theme from day to day, not recognized individually. When we look across the span of five dreams, we then see a common denominator surface. Dreams intend to feed our body, mind and souls. Learn to decipher them!

"Dreams are not about prosaic themes, not about reading,
writing and arithmetic, but about emotion."
Rosalind Cartwright

Dreams reflect emotions earlier experienced in the day and may be amplified by stored memories of similar experiences. Nocturnal information tends to be towards the negative side as it is what we normally minimize or ignore.

Negativity comes up in dreams to give us another chance of resolve. It is a tool used to bring balance back to our emotions. When we awaken from an upsetting dream, it is important to sift through it to discover an area needing resolve.

Try to remember ... the people we dream about may just be symbols and not representing themselves in particular. If we can identify who was in our dream and then understand what they represent, the dream will begin to unravel. How do these actions relates to our own story. Take a few minutes to explore as the emotions are generally the ones suppressed.

DREAM:
A woman was entering a motel room with her husband of many years. She excused herself to the bathroom to shower and change into pajamas. When she came out of the bathroom and crawled into bed, she immediately realized this man was not her husband.

RESPONSE:
The dreamer was concerned that she was harboring thoughts of an affair. As we slowly resolved the puzzle, however, she was able to see that she was still in her own routine ... her husband had changed. He was no longer the man she had married and was not appearing as his original self.

A teen age boy came to me about his dream. He said it war recurring, never changing. It was a simple dream and he could only get one meaning from it. DREAM: He was in his bedroom and he would lock himself in his closet.

His sense of the dream was that he was 'hiding' himself in the closet and perhaps this meant he was gay. It was obvious he was very concerned especially since he didn't think it was true.

Too often our interpretation is too narrow. We may take the meaning too literally. A recurring dream means you have yet to gain the insight.

So we explored what else he might be hiding from. The expression on his face was heartbreaking when new insight
appeared.

At times like this, I am thankful to have been a long time counselor so that I can be a good listener and sift through comments.

Without disclosing too much, he shared that his mom had been divorced for several years and she was now dating a man that made him fearful. He did not want to approach his mom and ruin her situation, so he hid it.

He felt relieved and his intention was to share his feelings with his mom. i do know that the dream did not occur once he understood what it meant.

DREAM:
(by a man in his early 40's)
My wife and I are going to a social gathering. She comes down the stairs dressed to the nines while I am in very casual attire. We go outside and she wishes to take her new car, but I insist upon driving...my old rusted pickup truck.

We arrive at the party and everyone fawns over my wife and ignores me. I wander over to the sidelines feeling ignored. Time passes and my wife tells me the kids need her and she rushes out the door. I remain at the party wondering why I am there.

When I leave the gathering, I am robbed by two men who take everything I possess.

THOUGHTS:
It is quite apparent this gentlemen does not feel like he is on an equal levels with his wife. He is feeling lesser than and believes others prefer her as well.

Her abrupt departure to go be with the kids, leaving him behind definitely reflects his fear of being abandoned. When I asked him what the muggers looked like, did they have masks .... He reported that in the dream the two men were dressed in suits carrying brief cases. Perhaps he was anticipating the end of his marriage and these men (lawyers) were going to rob him of everything.

Day Dreams are not confined to fantasies created in an idle mind. Day Dreams can happen right in front of us during our regular schedule. The trick is to pay attention to what we are acting out. What are we showing ourselves in our daily day dreams?

Previously, I mentioned being in a car accident where I was rear ended, pushed out into a cross section, and the damage was repaired by the other person's insurance.

After settling my body from the jolt, I asked myself what the day dream had meant. It was an event that surely had a message for me.

I had been toying with my life in terms of moving forward or staying stuck. I realized, figuratively, I had just been kicked in the rear, out of my comfort zone with minimal damage resulting in a safer place.

So I sold my house and moved out of my comfort zone into a larger city where I could unlimitedly grow. Yes, there were a few hardships, but minimal.

Monitor patterns happening within the daily routine. Do you keep getting lost, making a wrong turn, or repeatedly running into a person unfamiliar?

04/22/2019

THIRTY THREE year old male shared a recurring dream with me. He was concerned the dreams reflected a suicidal tendency that he was not consciously aware of.

DREAM;
In my car, I was driving along, then impulsively drove into waves of water. The vehicle becomes filled with water and it sinks to the bottom.

He has had different variations of this dream, but the constant is that he is driving, the car rolls over and over, becoming totally submerged.

RESPONSE: A vehicle is almost always symbolic for our own body. It is good that you are driving as it reflects you are in control of your self. Water is emotion, so the dream indicates that you repeatedly turn into high levels of emotion or chaos. You become submerged and stuck in the drama.

It would be a good idea to examine your relationships and revisit your boundaries. If you could pull your energy back in, rein it in, and create a stronger boundary which would allow you to be spectator and not get swept away into emotions of others and your self.

Hope this helps.... Virginia's Voice

For many who remember dreams categorize them as imagination and then dismiss the experience completely. They may say they did not understand the dream or it was weird or even bazaar. My response of course is what if it is the use of the imagination? Should the emphasis not be on the gift and not the wrappings of pretty paper and bows?

Dreaming tends to be a communication we often do not understand. Like any other language, time and thought, deciphering and translating are important factors. Basically, a dreamer gets out of a dream that which he or she invests.

Like any other habit or routine, one must be patient and repetitive to build a stage for which to stand. Identification of symbols grow in understanding the more they are explored.

So if the dreamer only remembers snippets of information begin with what is retained. Reinforce meanings by writing them down to be referred to over time.

I always dream of ____________.
(Childhood home, foreign country)
In every dream there is ________.
(An animal, angel, strangers)
The emotion I feel the most is ____.
(Joy, Fear, Sadness, Isolation)

Just begin with what is remembered. Jot it down and then refer to it when the next dream is remembered. What is similar and what is different? What might be implied?

Dream matter offers us insights and the knowledge isn't always understood in the moment. With building a routine of tracking dreams, one becomes more fluent in interpretation.

"I have found my way, step by step, proceeding from touch points that have emerged, some through conscious choice and some through dream state discovery."
Leonard Nimoy

While taking the back road home, I came to a dead end with an owl sitting on a post. I backed up, turned around, and traveled to another back road by passing the well traveled highway. My thoughts drifted back to the owl, as it seemed to be sitting there waiting for me. I knew an owl represented death and rebirth, but what did that have to do with me?

If we look at the above paragraph and read it as though it were a dream, we would learn a lesson. In my relationship, I was at a dead end. It was dying and there was no way to revive it. In spite of this visual sign of an owl, I backed up and tried it to return with a different approach. Notice that I avoided the highway where I could be exposed to more knowledge; instead, I again chose a back road.

Within two hours, my then relationship totally disintegrated and it wasn't until a few hours passed that I once again thought of the owl. I believe it was a desperate illustration for me to stop at the end and begin anew. The insinuation was to not invest more time and energy into a dead end, but to move forward through fear onto a new highway.

Many of our 'day dreams' carry messages for us, but we are generally moving too fast to be aware. Slow down, give room to new thought, and let the Universe speak to you as though you were in a dream!

The box was gorgeous! It was hand made by a craftsman using a honey oak. The grain was intriguing as was the added detail decorating the coffin. Wait, what? I began to realize I am inside this beautiful box, but I have no desire to remain. I can hear shovels of dirt being dropped down upon the box as though I were several feet beneath the ground. As panic races through my veins, I begin a guttural gasping for help. The more I try to project a sound, the less my voice is heard. BINGO! I awake from my very real dream receiving the significance instantly. On the outside of things, I appeared to be custom made and crafted with unique skills. My voice was projected to share knowledge with others, especially women. My insights were imperative to my posts on Virginia's Voice. My voice was my core and yet I was buried and non-verbal. Looking at the affluent relationship I was in, all seemed well, except I was being silenced to the point of losing all of my energy. How vivid and accurate dreams can be if we but take the time to sit with them. Dreams after all are filled with emotions we deny and avoid all day long.

Very strange dreams, indeed. I was watching myself be examined, but I was watching from above my body. While looking down, I saw into my body with all of my organs sectioned off. I didn't know what "they" were looking for, but my anxiety sky rocketed. The consensus showed that my body was in great working order. Okay .... then I glanced over and saw my car ... idle and abandoned. We know that cars are symbolic for our body. They are the vehicles in which we navigate life. Ooops .... this dream was indicating that I was spending more time out of my body .... completely out of my body. There must be a balance and as a human being, I tend to withdraw during holidays. Holidays seem to take all of our emotional debris and dump it on one pile and I cannot process it all, so withdraw. This dream is reflecting I need to get back to my life and live it. I need to use creative outlets to distract from chaos and turmoil. Hiding, clearly isn't the answer!

If a dream has captured our attention, there is important content to be deciphered. It is important to pick out the characters, the theme, and personal actions.

Be mindful that some characters (like an ex-husband) may be used as a symbol and may not involve him directly at all. What is the emotional theme ... frightening, threatening, loving, inspiring ... and how does that apply to the present life experience? The actions we take in the dream are they complimentary, opposite of normal, or exciting? A message lies within ....

VIRGINIA'S VOICE: Articulating Silence, Deciphering Dreams, and Exploring Inner Landscapes are three elements underlying subject matter for my blog since 2011. This opportunity has allowed me not only to develop writing skills, but to unleash my passion to engage with words.

Articulating Silence: Our voice is one of the most important tools to be used in life. It is not about being smart or feedback from others. We owe it to our lovely selves to honor and be responsible for what we say, think, and feel. The point is not about being right or wrong. The surge of energy flows through us when we utter our words, to release them whether out loud, with pen or art. To speak our truth ... even in silence ... unites our body mind and soul.

Deciphering Dreams: When we avoid reality, repress our emotions, and deny feelings, our dreams portray what we attempt to hide. If we do not pay attention, the dreams can turn into nightmares, attempting to gain our attention. I have recorded my dreams for years and have helped others understand what point is trying to surface. Dreams can reflect what we hide, our longings, and the existence of multiple life experiences.

Exploring Inner Landscapes: Inside each of us exists a world of information. As we bring light inward, we reduce the darkness from the past as it no longer serves a purpose. We unearth remarkable synchronicity engaging us with Divine connection. Developing our inner world, we begin to wake up and honor the gifts and talents defining ourselves authentically.

Whether a vision or a dream, messages will have no meaning to us if we are not open to the possibility of insightful exchange. All I know for sure ... I was walking down a sunlit path lined with trees with branches arching over the road. I was walking up an incline which seemed to lead out into an infinity of light.

The earth somehow fell beneath my feet and I was suspended in a ceiling of warm lovely light. It was not like the sun was beating down upon me, but as though the sky had become an eternal layer of heavenly golden light. A bird slowly dipped past by made entirely of pure light and I began to notice all of the other unlined shapes surrounding me.

As I gazed downward, I could see the tops of the trees with the enlightened path below. How strange to be floating outside of the physical, weightless, and yet filled with gentle peace. It was then the message clearly surfaced. We are all loving light in the realms above separated only by a layer of darkness hovering near the earth. As earth beings we increase the light within us to heal our shadows in hopes of ascending through the branches to our home in the light.

If you dream you are in a car, it is important to know where you are sitting. The vehicle is a symbol for yourself and you need to be driving your self. If it is someone else, who do you think it is? Why would they be driving your car ... control or aggression? Are you in the passenger seat or the back seat? What does this tell you about your sense of importance?

Once I had a dream ... I attended a school registration with a group of friends. We returned to my car and everyone was discussing whether or not they would follow through. It became my turn to share and I realized I was in the trunk! I was telling my friends I wanted to attend, but was going to wait and see who else would follow through.

Not good to be in the trunk of your own car. I was allowing way too many people to influence my life which was not in accordance with the journey I was yearning to travel.

So whom is driving your car ...

It is a challenge to recall your dream or to remember to jot it down for later thought. If you are sincerely interested in spite of the lack of follow through, you may want to track your day dreams.

Day dreams are not happening in the lofty dead zone of your day. Day dreams occur right before you and if you are aware, you will learn to spot them head on.

Throughout the day, seemingly ordinary things may happen, but with additional thought, deeper understanding can assist us in making decisions, changing perceptions and setting our sails.

09/07/2017

Dreams have shifted using loud back ground noise. Chaos and crisis scenarios are entering normally esthetic dream space. There is such a term, collective conscious that can be the trigger for these new negative invasions. Throughout the day we are being bombarded by disharmony and whether we agree or not, the negative energy is absorbed by us. If we are non-violent people living a very positive existence, these dark energies have no where to go and so they seep into our dreams. Do not allow fear to shake your confidence. Let these frightening thoughts or dreams simply pass through. Release them and be thankful of our own awareness and grateful for hope of peace to carry us forward.

DECIPHERING DREAMS has been a long time passion of mine. I have learned definitions, symbols, and themes to better understand the life I live. I maintained a dream journal for seven years, and I have made community, college, and private presentations. Dreams are truly a language speaking to us.

"They all dreamed of each other that night, as was natural, considering how close the partitions were between them, and how strangely they had been lifted off the earth to sit next to each other in mid-ocean, and see every detail of each others' faces, and hear whatever they chanced to say."
