Stumbled upon this poignant quote from the co-founder of Habitat for Humanity:

"...it’s easier to act your way into a new way of thinking, than to think your way into a new way of acting".

Pretty simple, sometimes...

Picked up a book I've not looked at for a few years, it's a fantastic read - a Stanford design school approach for successfully manifesting a life/career pivot...5 requirements to get where you want to go, but don't know how/where to start:

~ Curiosity
~ Bias to Action
~ Reframing
~ Awareness
~ Radical Collaboration

The book: "Designing Your Life - how to build a well-lived, joyful life" by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans - Have fun!

~ saw (and LOVED) this blog post from one of my favorite coaches, Tara Mohr:

"YOU are the instrument of your work... When I’m teaching, writing, coaching – that’s time when that instrument is being played. I want to have some concentrated periods of that every week. But every week I also need to take time – ample time – to tune the instrument, to change the person that the music is coming through.

I tune the instrument of me when I move my body, pray and meditate, process my life and my feelings, and also simply when I do the things that bring me joy. Some of the tuning is about releasing what I need to release.

Some is about absorbing new ideas. Some is about steeping in joy, about upliftment.

Yes, this is all self-care, but it is not only self-care. It is also the responsible preparation needed to do good work.”

Research: Stale Office Air Is Making You Less Productive

One of my new client companies hired me to help them to reimagine their work environment; multiple people are reporting feeling SO SLUGGISH, even in the late morning. Obvious causes ruled out. Early diagnoses includes poor ventilation, among other things. Solution: Fresh air! ..
Just think about how productive you and your teams could be if your GOT OUTSIDE together, on a regular basis? I just saw an REI ad that says Americans spend 95% of their time INDOORS. In my coaching practice, more and more I am highlighting time outdoors as a key component of ANY ACTION PLAN. ..
As spring is finally here - in most regions here in USA - where will you and your team meet, outside, for a major boost in team creativity and bonding? Check in with me if you need more data to support your plan.

A better ventilation system doesn’t have to break the bank.

At Wisdom 2.0 SAn Francisco last week, heard many important messages from modern day sages...the one that still blares is from Buddhist Frank Ostaseski - “don’t wait”. We have been talking about moving to slow down, lengthen the days, leave our rarified roosts (Tahoe, Tiburon..) and live in a less congested, less complicated, outdoors loving community. So, here we are. Almost 1 week later, close to owning a home just outside of Bend - in Sisters, Oregon. Not waiting. Got a sweet river running through the backyard. NOT WAITING.

Thanks Patty James for this:
New Year’s represents for many a time of hope and renewal. Sloughing off old habits that don’t suit us and bringing in the new! Your body, however, thinks every day is New Years. Most people think of their body as a fairly permanent structure, but most of it is in a state of constant renewal as old cells are discarded and new ones generated in their place. Red blood cells live approximately 120 days, skin cells 28-35 days, the liver 300-500 days, the entire human skeleton is thought to be replaced every 10 years or so and the stomach lining cells last only about 5 days. New research suggests that even the brain and heart muscle generates new cells.
We have an opportunity to create a new version of ourselves every day. How great is that?! Here's to a healthier New Year!

From my cousin, Holly.. Love this prescription.. no side effects!

PRESCRIPTION FOR THE DISILLUSIONED
By Rebecca del Rio

Come new to this
day. Remove the rigid
overcoat of experience,
the notion of knowing,
the beliefs that cloud your vision.

Leave behind the stories
of your life. Spit out the
sour taste of unmet expectation.
Let the stale scent of what-ifs
waft back into the swamp
of your useless fears.

Arrive curious, without the armor
of certainty, the plans and planned
results of the life you've imagined.
Live the life that chooses you, new
every breath, every blink of
your astonished eyes

"Mindlessness is the application of yesterday's business solutions to today's problems; Mindfulness is attunement to today's demands to avoid tomorrow's difficulties."

Seems so simple yet so often we default to mindlessness in most areas of our lives. Heard this on a podcast with mindfulness pioneer Ellen Langer of Harvard. Langer's theory has been applied to a wide number of fields, including health, business, aging, prejudice, and learning.

“You don’t have to be great to start, but you do have to start to be great."
- Zig Ziglar - still relevant.

Coming off of a very uplifting weekend at the in Mill Valley, "women's second annual entrepreneur lab". Timing is everything. If you have a business idea or a "move" in mind, let's get started. It's our time to make it happen. Thanks Grace for a very uplifting and informative weekend.

The Inconvenient Truths About Getting Work Done – The Mission – Medium

We all have big and small goals, we all procrastinate, and do some self-flogging when we do. I think this article shares some wisdom about how to cut yourself some slack.. and let this quote (from herein) sink in: “Do not wait: the time will never be ‘just right’. Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command and better tools will be found as you go along.” — Napoleon Hill

Humans are prolific procrastinators. People have struggled with habitual hesitation going back to ancient civilizations. It’s easy to make…

Some people are capable of being happy, enlightened, engaged, and creative with such "poverty" level wages. I want to meet these Cubans. Been a lifetime dream to go, am SO happy to be co-leading a yoga/cultural immersion trip.. looking forward to large doses of surprises, music and art, off of this rather troubling grid..

Sharing a wonderful quote I stumbled across on the Green Buddha website:
"Finish every day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities, no doubt, crept in. Forget them as soon as you can, tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely, with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

This is Your Anxious Brain on Meditation - Mindful

I like this frame (and this graphic): "mindfulness practice aims to do deeper work with our story-making habits, to give us more choice as triggers for when anxiety or depression emerge in our lives."

Mindfulness asks us to simply notice the storylines we create in our minds without trying to change them. Meditation gives us the space to choose not to react to those things that trigger our anxiety.

Is It Really All About the Journey?

I like this message. "In order to transform, we must be willing to change.
Along the way, we must become more than we thought possible, stretching into a better version of ourselves."

Why serial achievers aren’t always happy.

Do Mindful People Have a Stronger Sense of Self?

If you're looking for a reason to integrate meditation and mindfulness into your life, this should be a good read for you. Let me know if you agree.. when you are consistently acting in line with your values (a by-product of practicing mindfulness), certainly you're going to feel a stronger sense of self confidence.

Mindful people might be happier because they have a better idea of who they are, suggests a new study.

Love this bit of wisdom from Ilan Shamir of Your True Nature, especially since I love trees:

Advice from a Tree:

~ Stand tall and proud
~ Sink your roots deeply into the earth
~ Be content with your natural beauty
~ Go out on a limb
~ Drink plenty of water
~ Remember your roots
~ Enjoy the view!

I am living proof of my hypothesis that everyone, at some point in life, can use a coach for optimal outcomes: I am a coach who is hiring a coach to find a certain flavor of coaching competency programs... I already feel better knowing I have a trusted advisor on my case..

I've been talking to clients and friends about holiday blahs. Many of us have recently lost someone dear, or a job, or both. But this is not a new experience, it is the norm for me.
So...I’m owning this fact: The December holiday season truly confuses me, gets me off of my game. I’m not a holiday craftsperson, not a baker, typically not a sender of Holiday cards. I dislike shopping malls, especially during this season. I do not go to corporate holiday parties (any more). Yet, I AM joyful person, and I do love giving meaningful and thoughtful gifts. I do love decorating the tree, plugging in the outside lights.. So why does this season always feel so challenging? I have a theory, for my holiday confusion, anyway: I’m letting everyone else's “holiday stress” in. It’s not mine! It’s all around me, but I don't need to own it. I know it has to do with old narratives, missing life pieces, maybe some false nostalgia, definitely hyper-consumerism, and overfull calendars.
I’m a solution-finder, so after sitting down for way too many hours today, trying to find a joyful way through this holiday planning and communication, I’ve found my solution: Be present, go outside, limit social media, be loving, and stay fit.
Many of my clients are feeling the same, so I’ll share some really helpful tips for y'all, and me! Oh, since I have to get to the gym, I borrowed these from the Mayo Clinic's website ;-)

Please, be happy, healthy and joyful!
........................................
When stress is at its peak, it's hard to stop and regroup. Try to prevent stress and depression in the first place, especially if the holidays have taken an emotional toll on you in the past.

1. Acknowledge your feelings. If someone close to you has recently died or you can't be with loved ones, realize that it's normal to feel sadness and grief. It's OK to take time to cry or express your feelings. You can't force yourself to be happy just because it's the holiday season.

2. Reach out. If you feel lonely or isolated, seek out community, religious or other social events. They can offer support and companionship. Volunteering your time to help others also is a good way to lift your spirits and broaden your friendships.

3. Be realistic. The holidays don't have to be perfect or just like last year. As families change and grow, traditions and rituals often change as well. Choose a few to hold on to, and be open to creating new ones. For example, if your adult children can't come to your house, find new ways to celebrate together, such as sharing pictures, emails or videos.

4. Set aside differences. Try to accept family members and friends as they are, even if they don't live up to all of your expectations. Set aside grievances until a more appropriate time for discussion. And be understanding if others get upset or distressed when something goes awry. Chances are they're feeling the effects of holiday stress and depression, too.

5. Stick to a budget. Before you go gift and food shopping, decide how much money you can afford to spend. Then stick to your budget. Don't try to buy happiness with an avalanche of gifts.
Try these alternatives:
o Donate to a charity in someone's name.
o Give homemade gifts.
o Start a family gift exchange.

6. Plan ahead. Set aside specific days for shopping, baking, visiting friends and other activities. Plan your menus and then make your shopping list. That'll help prevent last-minute scrambling to buy forgotten ingredients. And make sure to line up help for party prep and cleanup.

7. Learn to say no. Saying yes when you should say no can leave you feeling resentful and overwhelmed. Friends and colleagues will understand if you can't participate in every project or activity. If it's not possible to say no when your boss asks you to work overtime, try to remove something else from your agenda to make up for the lost time.

8. Don't abandon healthy habits. Don't let the holidays become a free-for-all. Overindulgence only adds to your stress and guilt.
Try these suggestions:
o Have a healthy snack before holiday parties so that you don't go overboard on sweets, cheese or drinks.
o Get plenty of sleep.
o Incorporate regular physical activity into each day.

9. Take a breather. Make some time for yourself. Spending just 15 minutes alone, without distractions, may refresh you enough to handle everything you need to do. Find something that reduces stress by clearing your mind, slowing your breathing and restoring inner calm.
Some options may include:
o Taking a walk at night and stargazing.
o Listening to soothing music.
o Getting a massage.
o Reading a book.

10. Seek professional help if you need it. Despite your best efforts, you may find yourself feeling persistently sad or anxious, plagued by physical complaints, unable to sleep, irritable and hopeless, and unable to face routine chores. If these feelings last for a while, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional

Suggestion for building your self-esteem:
At the end of the day, write down all your small accomplishments and then literally, meditate on the list. Stroke your hands and arms as you do so and immerse yourself in the pleasure of having achieved your goals. Positive psychology research shows that writing down your daily successes for just one week will gradually raise your self esteem and self confidence - why not try it for 3 months?! Imagine how "on your game" you'll feel..

Since returning from my grid-break, I have been pondering this quote by TS Eliot:

"Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?"

And, I've been trying to be extremely selective about the noise that fills my ears during the day (you rarely see me without "EarPods in".). The podcasts and news sources have been trimmed down meaningfully, and I'm trying to spend more time in silence, writing, just noticing. The result? I find that I am more aligned with my husband, my friends/family, my coaching clients than I have ever been. I suggest the same exercise for anyone who feels like information overload is an annoyance, a challenge, or even a source of anxiety.
