However, truth be told, there is amongst many of us a subtle fascination with the darker side of life. To prove this point, just look at the major motion pictures, many books, and magazine stories produced on this subject. For many years we have been making commemorative coins designed primarily for coin collectors. Often these have just been commemorating an interesting subject, but on a number o
f occasions there have been legal tender coins produced in cooperation with countries such as the Republic of Liberia, Cook Islands, Zambia, Republic of Fiji, and the Mesa Grande Sovereign Nation. Recent subjects have ranged from the death of the People's Princess, Diana, to the death of pop star Michael Jackson, tot he history of Native-Americans who have made major, relatively unknown, contributions to our country. For example, take the lone Indian woman who was primarily responsible for saving George Washington's starving troops in Valley Forge. Eventually they were able to cross the Delaware River to attack the British in a battle that secured America's independence. Did you know a Native-American woman was canonized as a saint by the Holy Roman Church? Also, one of the marines who hoisted the flag at Mt. Suribachi after the famed battle of Iwo Jima was a Native-American. The series of Native-American coins has been issued as a legal tender by the Mesa Grande Sovereign Nation. Not many of us know there are sovereign nations contained within the borders of the continental United States. They have the right to issue their own legal tender. Interesting fact—when you visit a local Indian casino, you have technically left the United States. Now onto the subject of our dissertation. As mentioned previously, there exists an interest in the darker side of life. In America, it started with the Wild West. Most of us will remember Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Jesse James, Billy the Kid, Doc Holiday, Cattle Kate, and many others. In our series "The Faces of Evil" we move on through the gangster era, prohibition era, and finally La Cosa Nostra. This last group still exists today, but what is mot interesting is their mantra, "We only kill each other." Included in these groups are many interesting faces and stories.
