Garden Guru AZ

Garden Guru AZ Urban horticulturist specializing in desert southwest landscape plant selection, garden consulting and care of all plants with emphasis on sustainability.

I am an avid gardener and have been for as long as I can remember. I attended Arizona State University and received a degree of Bachelor of Science with an emphasis in Urban Horticulture. Gardening in the Desert Southwest can be challenging; however, when success of a healthy plant is achieved the feeling is elating! One of the fortunate aspects of living here is that gardening is a year-round pro

ject. I harvest vegetables throughout the year, at times with such an abundance that I get to share with family, friends and a local food bank. A passion of mine is collecting and propagating succulents and cacti. The Sonoran Desert is a very unique part of the world and the only home to the saguaro cactus, which I am fortunate to have in my yard. Since moving into our home in 1991, the saguaro has grown three new arms so determining what its age is, is not an easy task. Regardless, like many native plants they are a wonderful addition to any landscape, whether in the ground or in containers. Incorporating native plants into a landscape can provide dwellings for native wildlife while using limited resources. Another passion of mine, is that I believe water is a precious resource and should be treated as such no matter where you live. Even though I live in the desert, one thing my education taught me was that you can still have a lush landscape that does not require excess water usage. A landscape not only improves property value but it also assist in reducing the heat island effect that cities experience because of the amount of concrete present. Services I offer include:

Plant Selection for desert landscapes, bee and hummingbird gardens, vegetable gardens, decorative annual & perennial displays

March is just around the corner and such a fun time in the garden! If you haven't already planted your tomatoes time is ticking. We like to get them in the ground so they have time to produce before the summer heat hits. There is a variety that does great in the lower desert, Pearson however; they aren't always available. Plant a short days to maturity variety. There are so many vegetables and flowers that can be planted in March. For a complete list contact me. Have a great day and Happy planting!

Hello! It's hard to believe that January 2021 is almost over! There is still lots to do in the garden. Most importantly, nutrient dense soil is required to have healthy productive plants. Adding compost from AZ Worm Farm is a great way to improve your soil. They sell it in bags or by bulk. Support local businesses as much as possible. There are many fruits and vegetables you can plant now; Swiss chard, lettuce, carrots, beets just to name a few. For a complete list please contact me and I can email you a planting calendar.

Desert people! I am writing to you today because I am seeing a lot of stressed plants around the valley!! Please water your plants!!! Your irrigation system should run a minimum of one hour for shrubs but with these continued HOT temperatures, add another hour on. Run no more than every other day. For your trees, you want to water to a depth of 24-36 inches. This can be tested by taking a piece of re-bar and pushing it into the soil after your system has ran. The age of your tree will determine how frequently you should run your system. Placement of your emitters is very important. They should not be up against the trunk! Feeder roots grow outward, move your emitters out.
Please contact me if you would like healthy thriving plants!
