Silly Steve Madrone took the City’s covid hysterics and attacks on our local businesses to the County Supervisors — they said he and the City were wrong!

While County STRs got lucky, the City went ahead with its illegitimate 90 day “urgency” ordinance and shut down our businesses against State and County orders.

Now, our still recovering lodging and STR properties, and all of the small businesses and people they support, need a practical, proven, business-minded County Supervisor to help — Vote Larry Doss!

Vote Doss for Supervisor 5th District — Larry has endorsements from three of the five current Supervisors along with former 5th District Supervisors, Ryan Sundberg, and Anna Sparks. Current Sheriff, William Honsal and former Sheriff, Mike Downey also endorse Larry, along with Arcata Professional Firefighters Local 4981 and CalFire Local 2881. Hundreds of residents across the 5th District & Humboldt County support Larry Doss, please join us!

Planning to head out to Gold Bluff's Beach or Fern Canyon over the next couple of weeks? Be prepared for 30-miniute delays on Davidson Road (access road to Gold Bluffs Beach from Highway 101) Mon-Thurs from 7am - 2pm, through June 17th.

Why be delayed, or potentially find the parking lots full at Fern Canyon, if there is an alternative way to access this highly visited area of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park? Did you know that you can turn your trip to Fern Canyon into an adventure that takes you through other beautiful areas of this iconic park? Take the road less travelled by hiking into Fern Canyon via the James Irvine Trail. Park at the Prairie Creek Visitor Center, and take the James Irvine Trail for an 11 mile roundtrip hike through old-growth redwood forests before entering the spruce forests of the coast.

WHALES 🐋

WHALES 🐋

The watch for California Gray Whale (Eschrichtius robustus) migration is now in full swing! Beginning in January and ending around May, these school bus-sized whales may be seen surfacing just beyond the breaking waves. They are journeying north from their breeding grounds in Baja California to their summer feeding grounds in Alaska.

Gray whales are unique among the filter feeding baleen whales; they do not skim for plankton like right and bowhead whales, nor do they take such massive gulps of plankton, krill, or herring as do rorquals (such as blue, fin or sei whales). Gray whales are mud-grubbers, which kick up mouthfuls of ocean bottom sediment in order to access their favorite prey: amphipods and other small crustaceans. The baleen (comb-like structure used to filter small prey) of gray whales is much coarser than that of other whales because of this. This feeding adaptation is also the reason why gray whales have the only migration that can be seen regularly so close from shore.

The best places to look for migrating grays at Redwood National and State Parks are from our vista points at High Bluff Overlook, Klamath River Overlook, and the Crescent Beach Overlook, although their spouts may be seen while standing on any of our beaches. (*Please note: the overlooks at High Bluff and Klamath are currently temporarily closed due to COVID restrictions on neighboring tribal lands.)
