In honor of National Women’s Equality Day let’s celebrate the first female architect in Oklahoma and the only female architect in Missouri, Arkansas and Kansas at the time. Mary Caroline Cole designed fire stations 18 and old 19.
She was the first to design a fire station with a drive through bay. Mary was an advocate for the handicapped and designed all of her buildings with the disabled in mind, long before federal regulations. She was a pioneer in her field.
We appreciate you Mary Caroline Cole! 👧🏼💪🏼

Fire Station #13

The original fire station #13 is my favorite :)
Fire station #13 is at 3924 Charles Page Blvd in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It is the work of Albert Joseph Love. AJ Love built around 150 schools, hospitals and public buildings in NE Okla. from 1916-1939. Included in those 150 buildings also is fire station #5. He also built Pershing school which isn't too far from this station. . This is a very unique Zig Zag Art Deco building that is west of downtown along the railroad tracks and not many people see it now unless they 'happen' upon it. This station closed in 1964 when the city built a newer and much larger station nearby. It was sold to a family around 1966 and that same family still owns it to this day. The station is used for storage and nothing has been done to the interior. The original light fixtures are there, the bathroom/locker room is all original. The nametags are STILL on the FFs locker doors! The ticker room and the opening for the gamewell equipment is still there. The original bay doors are still there. This would be a wonderful restoration project! What a neat little fire museum it would make, with a vintage firetruck in the apparatus bay :)
The lot on the east side, (left) is vacant and would make a nice parking lot.

Or..... how about a bed and breakfast? How COOL would that be for a family to rent to stay in a night or two?

One of my other interests is researching homes, particularly mail order catalog homes...like this one built in West Orange, NJ by a firefighter in the early 1920's.

This house because of its width is especially good for a narrow lot. And at the same time it is two full stories in height, has six big rooms, a bath, and plenty of closet space.

Thanks to a Tulsa Oklahoma Houses by Mail, Sears Homes, Wardway, Aladdin and more friend for sharing with me!

The interior doesn't look anything like a garage anymore.

Fire Station #5 album feature!

Fire Station #5 islocated at 102 E 18th. It was opened in 1917. The station was razed and rebuilt in 1932 in the same location. This historic PWA building is built in the art deco style that makes Tulsa architecture so popular. By 1932 the horse drawn wagons were long gone but this station was built in the traditional 2-story style. It was the last two story station built until 1978. It is the oldest station that remains in use.
The architect, Albert Joseph Love, built the original Fire Station #13 as well as more than 150 schools, hospitals and other buildings in northeastern Oklahoma between 1916 and 1939. AJ Love and Co.
The building was remodeled in 1966 by Russell L Magee. Except for the removal of the hose tower during the 1966 remodel, the exterior remains all original including the clay tiles, window boxes, balcony rail and grates on the facades which are all constructed of wrought iron. This is a must see if you visit Tulsa, Oklahoma!
