“Hara hachi bu” – the Okinawan, 2500-year old Confucian mantra said before meals reminds us to stop eating when their stomachs are 80 percent full.

The 20% gap between not being hungry and feeling full could be the difference between losing weight or gaining it.

People in the blue zones eat their smallest meal in the late afternoon or early evening and then they don’t eat any more the rest of the day.

Of course we will touch on this principle in our retreat agenda, however, committing to this lifestyle is required for lasting results.

8 life lessons from Costa Rican Centenarians

1. Have a plan de vida.

Successful centenarians have a strong sense of purpose. They feel needed and want to contribute to a greater good.

2. Drink hard water.

Nicoyan water has the country’s highest calcium content, perhaps explaining the lower rates of heart disease, as well as stronger bones and fewer hip fractures.

3. Keep a focus on family.

Nicoyan centenarians tend to live with their families, and children or grandchildren provide support and a sense of purpose and belonging.

4. Eat a light dinner.

Eating fewer calories appears to be one of the surest ways to add years to your life. Nicoyans eat a light dinner early in the evening.

5. Maintain social networks.

Nicoyan centenarians get frequent visits from neighbors. They know how to listen, laugh, and appreciate what they have.

6. Keep hard at work.

Centenarians seem to have enjoyed physical work of all their lives. They find joy in everyday physical chores.

7. Get some sensible sun.

Nicoyans regularly take in the sunshine, which helps their bodies produce vitamin D for strong bones and healthy body function. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with a host of problems, such as osteoporosis and heart disease, but regular, “smart” sun exposure (about 15 minutes on the legs and arms) can help supplement your diet and make sure you’re getting enough of this vital nutrient.

8. Embrace a common history.

Modern Nicoyan’s roots to the indigenous Chorotega and their traditions have enabled them to remain relatively free of stress. Their traditional diet of fortified maize and beans may be the best nutritional combination for longevity the world has ever known.

According to a 2017 JAMA study, nearly half of all U.S. deaths from heart disease, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes may be attributed in part to poor diet.

While corn has gotten a bad rap in recent years for being a starchy carb, the purple corn flour in pinolillo is a powerful natural antioxidant that’s been shown in studies to improve circulation and to aid in reduction of cortisol.

Recently the potential health benefits of consuming purple corn have been researched:

One study at the University of Ohio, for example, concluded that anthocyanins from purple corn killed in vitro cancer cells.

And another study in Japan discovered that the anthocyanin C3G that’s found in purple corn prevented obesity in mice.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture is currently supporting research at the University of Illinois to determine if purple corn can fight off major diseases.

It has also been found that the outer layer of kernels could be a natural food coloring which could replace one of the major dyes used in the US — red dye No. 40.

This would allow more people to readily enjoy the benefits of purple corn through a natural dye that could be added to foods and beverages during manufacturing, thus transferring the nutritional benefits straight to consumers.

I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to eating local cuisine every day while I'm in Costa Rica.

Awareness of your sense of purpose is worth up to seven years of extra life expectancy.

The Okinawans call it “Ikigai” and the Nicoyans call it “plan de vida;” for both it translates to “why I wake up in the morning.”

Human beings thrive when we have a sense of purpose and duty to accomplish a task, especially a task we personally love doing.

So, what are the Blue Zones?

The concept of blue zones grew out of the demographic work done by Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain outlined in the Journal of Experimental Gerontology, identifying Sardinia as the region of the world with the highest concentration of male centenarians.

Pes and Poulain drew concentric blue circles on the map highlighting these villages of extreme longevity and began to refer to this area inside the circle as the blue zone.

Building on that demographic work, Dan pinpointed other longevity hotspots around the world and dubbed them blue zones.

Blue Zones® is now a trademark of Blue Zones, LLC, and reflects the lifestyle and the environment of the world’s longest-lived people.

Let's not forget to do this...

You will not want to forget to schedule your test before a trip abroad no matter where you're traveling, since entry requirements can change in an instant and often do.

Most countries that mandate a test require a negative certificate that has been issued within 72 hours of boarding.

Schedule a test two mornings before your departure, so that you receive your certificate the same evening and can print it out in advance prior to your flight.

You can schedule a test in your local urgent care facility, community drive-in, or call your doctor.

Once the test results are in, you'll receive a certificate via email.

Don't forget to print out several copies of your negative certificate and put it somewhere safe before heading to the airport.

Cacao—one of the main ingredients in chocolate — has a long list of health benefits.

And people of the 21st century are certainly not the first to recognize this. Raw cocoa beans as we call them in America, have been used for centuries by indigenous people for their healing properties and nutritional value.

Found to some extent in nearly all fruits and vegetables, flavonoids are responsible for giving flower blossoms their color.

And the color is what attracts pollinators to plants, thus continuing the cycle of life for generations.

In humans, flavonoids have been shown to have antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory effects.

3. Down Shift

It's easy to look at happy people and think, "they must not esxperience stress."

Of course this isn't true, but it may make us feel better in the moment.

However, what serves us even more is to focus on intentional habits that will decrease the free radicals released in our bodies when our cortisol levels rise and inflammation begins to occur.

This is exactly what the inhabitants in the indigenous Blue Zone areas do:

In Sardinia, they have happy hour

In Okinawa, they start every day with time spent remembering ancestors

7th-Day Adventists pray regularly

Ikarians take daily naps.

What we hope you take away from these cultural examples is that emotional well-being has much more to do with supporting yourself than avoiding triggers.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when I say "fitness?"

Is it weight-lifting?
Is it running marathons?
Is it monthly gym memberships?

Good news!
The world’s longest-lived people don’t make ANY of this a priority when it comes to supporting physical health.

Instead, they live in environments that empowers manual effort in all things so that movement becomes as second nature as breathing.

They toil the land, planting and harvesting their own crops, without employing the use of mechanical conveniences for house and yard work.

More good news!
I'm not asking you to do any yard or house work during this workshop LOL.
