Perreca's.....Experience, Enjoy and CR DESTINATION'S amazing treasures!

We're happy to spotlight MORE PERRECA'S, one of this year's Good News Awards recipients!

When the pandemic hit, owner Maria Paper (pictured below) quickly went from dine-in service to a drive-thru model and food drops in cities throughout the Capital Region. While helping to keep staff and customers safe, this new food drop option also meant that people outside of Schenectady could enjoy their delicious food (think lasagna, chicken parmesan, classic spaghetti and meatballs – just to name a few).

To support other local restaurants, Papa also founded the 518 Restaurants Facebook group as a forum for restaurant owners to make announcements about specials, hours of operations, new protocols etc. Even as some restaurants are now allowing limited dine—in seating, the 12,000+ person Facebook group still averages 100 posts per day!

Expertience and Enjoy the treasure that is the Erie Canal Museum

Today’s looks at Florence Barney, a woman who on February 11, 1986 gave the Erie Canal Museum an oral history interview shortly after her 90th birthday.

Florence was born February 1, 1896 onboard one of her father, Charles Heagle’s, canal boats and lived on the canal until she was 7. According to Florence, her father operated two boats, originally powered by mules, lashed together, one of which had quarters for her family, which included her mother Margaret, sister Ellen, and brother Howard, while the other boat housed the boats’ crew. Of course, the boats were more than mere houses, they served the important function of hauling freight. The most common cargo carried by the Heagle boats was grain, transported from Buffalo to New York City’s impressive grain elevators, where the boats would frequently be rocked by fast moving pleasure boats headed to Coney Island, though the boats also carried other goods, like coal and sand, up from New York, regularly unloading in Syracuse. Florence in fact spent one winter of her early childhood in Syracuse when the boats froze there for the winter before they could get to their usual wintering spot off New York City. They were similarly stuck in Fort Plain one winter. These are just some of the incredible insights and anecdotes that Florence’s recollections included, which also dealt with day to life on the boats, the food they ate, the music played by her father on the accordion, and even her visit to Buffalo’s Pan-American Exhibition, where William McKinley was assassinated. We hope in the coming months to share even more of these oral histories with you all and also to collect more as part of our Erie Eats projects, funded by the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.

For the safety of everyone, Discover Saratoga has reimagined Chowderfest for 2021. Introducing Saratoga Chowder Tour 2021, a safe alternative to a Saratoga favorite!

During this week-long event, patrons can enjoy a cup or bowl of chowder when they come for lunch or dinner at participating Saratoga County restaurants and vote for their favorite online. Participating restaurants will also have pints and quarts of chowder to-go.

Always fantastic reasons to SMILE and ENJOY the Capital Region's unique events and safe family actitivies. Make sure to experience, enjoy and CR Destination's amazing Halloween Harvest Pumpkin Event at the Altamont FairGrounds!
The displays feature over 7,000 hand carved pumpkins, each of them representing a different theme, like dinosaurs, skeletons and even aliens. It's already become very popular, with the first two weekends selling out.

Now that October is here, many people are looking to get into the Halloween spirit. But, traditional hayrides and haunted houses have had to be adapted because of the pandemic.
