TBT 2013 May 6 Sedona. Desert wildflowers are amongst the most spectacular. The frills, lusciousness, and colors stand in such obvious contrast to the harsh bleached out earth tones.

The Latin name Eschscholzia californica, after a 19th century Baltic German naturalist, was bestowed upon this flower on a Russian scientific voyage of discovery to California in 1816. Native to the Western U.S. from Oregon to Baja, it is either a perennial or annual depending on where it grows. It's petals close each night and on cloudy days. Aside from being illegal to pick California's state flower on state owned property, you would also be disappointed as the petals fall off almost immediately...
