The Herrnhut Moravian Star
Saxony's Video Advent Calendar: Dec 24, 2021 - The Herrnhut Moravian Star
The Moravian Church was founded in 1722 by Nikolaus Ludwig Count von Zinzendorf and Protestant refugees from today’s Czech Republic. They erected a new town called Herrnhut, meaning “care of the Lord”. Soon they took up missionary work, leaving their children behind in boarding schools, who missed their parents. To comfort them and as an exercise in geometry, a mathematics teacher had them built Christmas stars, which quickly developed into a tradition. In 1897, Dutch-born Pieter Hendrik Verbeek invented a new variety which could be disassembled and shipped easily, with a metal frame holding together the pointed paper elements. A manufactory was established, the Moravian Stars conquered the world and they are still made in Herrnhut today.

Barockgarten Großsedlitz
Saxony's Video Advent Calendar: Dec 23, 2021 - Barockgarten Großsedlitz
Saxony’s most splendid ruler Augustus the Strong had great plans for his new property in Großsedlitz that one of his ministers, Imperial Count August Christoph von Wackerbarth had been forced to sell to him. The mansion and the orangery were to be replaced by a palace and the garden space was to be vastly enlarged. After all, Augustus wanted to celebrate the annual festival of the Order of the White Eagle, which he had founded, in style. So, he did, but his vision of a Saxon Versailles never became a complete reality. But what remains, is very impressive. The gardens are richly decorated with sculptures and the fruits from the orange trees stand for the Golden Apples of the Hesperides, which Hercules had to steal as one of his labors. And Augustus wanted to be nothing less than an equivalent to the mythological hero from Greece.

Weesenstein Castle
Saxony's Video Advent Calendar: Dec 21, 2021 - Weesenstein Castle
The world is indeed topsy-turvy when it comes to Weesenstein Castle. Originally located on top of a rock, it grew in both directions. So, the stables are on the fifth floor above the living quarters, while the banquet hall is in the attic. Weesenstein Castle came into possession of Saxony’s Royal family in the 19th century and survived hard times unaffected. In the medieval parts, visitors can learn about the noble family which owned Weesenstein Castle for 350 years. The Baroque and Neo-classical living quarters provide a good insight into how the Royals lived. The reception area was designed by Gottfried Semper, architect of the famous Dresden opera house. The Protestant chapel is the work of Johann George Schmidt, who completed the Church of Our Lady or Frauenkirche in Dresden. And the baroque garden is simply a joy.

Spinnerei Leipzig
Saxony's Video Advent Calendar: Dec 20, 2021 - Spinnerei Leipzig
The „Spinnerei“ in Leipzig used to be the largest cotton spinning mill not only in Saxony, but on the European continent, processing up to 5 million kilos of cotton every year. Production came to a full halt in the year 2000, after which the factory was redeveloped into a space for the creative community. Numerous artists have established their studios within the thick walls of the factory buildings, among them Neo Rauch, the most famous exponent of the so-called New Leipzig School, turning the Spinnerei into one of the most important centers of contemporary art. Artistic works are on display in the workshops themselves, in a number of galleries on the grounds and during regular exhibitions. Spinnerei is open to visitors almost every day and offers guided tours and many events.

The Escape Museum
Saxony's Video Advent Calendar: Dec 19, 2021 - The Escape Museum
Colditz Castle has a checkered history, but it is best known today as a prisoner of war camp for allied officers between 1939 and 1945. The prisoners made more than 300 attempts to escape. Some of these were strokes of genius, but most of those who escaped where caught eventually. The Escape Museum tells some of their captivating stories. Nothing fascinates more than story behind the Colditz Glider. Behind a false wall in the attic, two pilots assembled a two-seater, using stolen pieces of wood, floorboards, bed springs, electric wires, and, for the skin, sleeping bags starched with cooked millet. But the plane never took off, since the camp was freed by the Americans. In the year 2000, a replica successfully made a flight, proving that the daring plan would have worked.

Muskau Park
Saxony's Video Advent Calendar: Dec 18, 2021 - Muskau Park
Hermann Ludwig Heinrich Prince von Pückler-Muskau was a man of many talents. He served in various armies, was military governor of Bruges, a real dandy, an avid traveler, a prominent writer and a ladies’ man. But he was also a self-taught genius of landscape architecture whose influence went as far as America. Starting in 1815, he created a huge landscape park around his castle and town. No effort was spared. He resettled a whole village, brought in large amounts of topsoil from elsewhere and was the first to relocate large trees for his vistas, creating an artificial landscape that looks perfectly natural. After German Reunification, the Muskau Park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, having been revitalized by Saxony and its neighbor Poland, sharing the park grounds since 1945.

Church of St. Mary in Pirna
Saxony's Video Advent Calendar: Dec 17, 2021 - Church of St. Mary in Pirna
Pirna still looks like on the paintings of famous Italian artist Bernardo Bellotto, better known as Canaletto, from the 18th century. The Church of St. Mary is one Saxony’s largest and certainly one of the most beautiful. While under construction, the Reformation reached Pirna and it was completed as a Protestant church, obvious by the statues of Martin Luther and Melanchthon on one of the portals. The two reformers are also depicted inside the church as the evangelists Luke and Mark. The impressive rib vaulting is decorated with scenes from the bible. The interior has survived virtually unchanged. Particularly worth mentioning are the baptismal font with children at its base, the pulpit and the altar made from local sandstone, depicting scenes from the Old and the New Testament.

Stolpen Castle and Countess Cosel
Saxony's Video Advent Calendar: Dec 16, 2021 - Stolpen Castle
Rapunzel is only a fairy-tale character, but Anna Constantia Countess of Cosel must have felt like Rapunzel during her involuntary stay in Stolpen Castle. She had been the greatest love and the favorite mistress of Saxony’s most splendid ruler, Augustus the Strong. When she fell out of favor and was seen as dangerous for the state, she was imprisoned in Stolpen for the rest of her life, which meant for almost half a century. First, she lived in elegant rooms in the armory, but, after a fire, she had to move into St. John’s Tower, today mostly called “Cosel Tower”. She never saw Augustus again and her hair never grew long enough. Her grave is in the chapel of the castle, of which only the foundations remain. But her tragic story lives on.

Chemnitz Benedictine monastery
Saxony's Video Advent Calendar: Dec 15, 2021 - A Benedictine monastery
Chemnitz is usually not shortlisted when it comes to a romantic getaway. After all, it calls itself “City of Modernity”. However, there is another side of Chemnitz. Around the former Benedictine monastery from the 12th century, later used as a hunting palace, half-timbered houses huddle up against one another. In many of them, there are restaurants today. The church features impressive pieces of art. In the former monastery rooms, there is a wonderful exhibition of Gothic sculptures. One of the highlights is the so-called Sacred Tomb from the late 15th century. It is a moveable shrine which was only in use between Ash Friday and Easter Sunday to display a life-size depiction of the body of Christ. Only two of these shrines have survived in Germany and both can be found in Saxony.

Militärhistorisches Museum
Saxony's Video Advent Calendar: Dec 14, 2021 - Militärhistorisches Museum
People interested in militaria should avoid the Museum of Military History in Dresden. Everybody else should definitively pay a visit, for it is different from other military museums. American star architect Daniel Libeskind drove a dramatic wedge through an old armory building, symbolizing the destruction of Dresden. The concept of the museum is also different. Technology is not in the focus. Instead, it concentrates on the effects that war has on human beings. It informs about history, particularly in the old parts of the building, but also raises questions, for which more than one answer is possible. Visitors have to make up your own mind. And there is always room for artistic expression to enhance the experience. And a unique experience it is without doubt.
