For the past 250+ years the York County History Center (YCHC) has served as an immersive window into York’s rich history so that we may discover, explore, and better understand our common humanity.

When the YCHC purchased the former steam plant in 2015, they had a vision to reignite the building’s role as a community asset that celebrates our county’s unique and diverse heritage.

We are honored to witness the transformation of this historic York icon and excited to experience the new, innovative and interactive space - thanks to a collaborative effort by the City of York, Warehaus, abSketches, and The PRD Group.

Like a steamboat anchored at the heart of York’s Codorus Creek, this cultural destination will propel us into the future by connecting us to our past.

✨Just one of many historic landmarks to breathe new life into the city. ✨ Built in 1925, The Yorktowne Hotel will re-open its doors this Fall as part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton. With inspiring modern amenities and reflective historic elements, the Yorktown Hotel will certainly be an unforgettable experience unlike any other. We’re very excited about the synergy this will add to our city and we look forward to future tours of this gem!

In 1888 Commissioned by J.A. Dempwolf for $30,350, the building was constructed in an L-Shape design in a Romanesque Revival style, weaving into the brownstone are accents of wood painted green. There are five towers, all with pyramid roofs. To define a different style on the archway of the doors, it was done in a Victorian Fashion. The market has never been closed down since it’s celebrated opening in December 1888

Fluhrer Building
17-19 West Market Street
Harry H. Fluhrer was a fine jewelry owner, who in his shop also sold silver, and delicate decorated Plateware. Becoming very successful, Fluhrer in 1911 built his dream home. A SPARKLING glaze covers the exterior that literally sparkles✨ in the sunlight. Do not be distracted, or think this beauty tacky, as J.A. Dempwolf, the architectural genius behind the building painstakingly carved many intricate and admired details. The architect made sure to leave his mark in recognition of his hard work, on the back you can find on brick stamped m, “JAD 1911.” The upper floor displays large arched windows. Written on the top in a very flamboyant fashion, FLUHRER.

St. Mary’s Church
311 South George Street
Originally constructed for $30,000, the building had a brick facade. In 1914 granite was laid over the brick to give an elegant European feel. There are three doors to welcome catechists as they enter. The cathedral stands 185 feet in height, and the three towers are embellished with belfries. In 2002 the ASTOUNDING discovery 8 images of Mary on the ceiling, that had been carelessly painted over, and HIDDEN for over 100 years, were painstakingly restored to their majestic Michaelangeloean style of Mary.

The Women’s Club is a building with strong Victorian architectural elements, constructed in 1880. Originally a single family home, in 1917, a few wives got their savings together, and purchased the home as their club, in their names 😉! The all female club owned the building until 2005, when it was privately bought, with a promise the house could still be used as a club. Currently in 2022 this piece of History is for sale through ROCK Commercial Real Estate, LLC

Admired from afar in the Women’s Club building, The Billmeyer House is a tall Italian style Mansion built in 1860 by Charles Billmeyer. The owner made his fortune in railway cars supplied to Mexico.
The exterior windows are delicately ornate and thin. The roof is crowned with a feature that allowed ventilation and light. Today the building is owned by The First Presbyterial Church.

YORK WATER COMPANY
130 East Market Street
Residents of Y❤️RK, Did you know that we are in possession of a Neoclassical Revival Building? Come discover The York Water Company!
Upon walking through the guilded doors, you are greeted by a 25-foot-high ceiling, decorated in Greek, Roman, and Christian mythological themes. The York Water Company was originally constructed in 1816 to fight fires, using hallowed out logs to carry the water, later a water filtration using sand was added. In 1848 the pipes were changed to cast-iron, to carry water. The pentiment on the facade features a decorative tympanum with water embellishments. It is truly one of the city many architectural gems, AND to this day residents may pay their utility bill in the beauty of this masterpiece.
