Wow fabulous

Comprised of 2.7 million acres in northwest Alaska, Bering Land Bridge National Preserve is one of the nation’s most remote national parks. The bright pinks, yellows and purples of summer turn into deeper and darker reds, yellows, greens and browns of fall before a blanket of white falls upon the tundra.

Enjoy the change of seasons wherever you may be!

This week’s Bad Squirrel is Fig Bar Felix 🐿

Felix is a known con artist, last spotted skulking around the trailhead of Riverside Walk, munching on a fig bar. Like many crime-squirrels around Temple of Sinawava, we suspect Fig Bar Felix began his crime streak as the youngest member of a prominent crime squirrel family, encouraged to take up the life by his parents and their accomplices. Witnesses who spotted Felix suspect that he must have pulled a clever con to acquire his fig bar feast, as he has never been known to board the shuttle and head to the store to buy them.

Once a squirrel, or any animal, learns to associate humans with food, they will change their natural behavior to beg for food from people. Wild animals become unhealthy from eating human food and can grow dependent on it as a food source. This leads to nuisance behavior and can eventually lead to the death of wildlife – whether from natural causes or due to increasingly aggressive behavior.

Don’t be an accomplice! Keep your distance from wildlife, and never feed them. Not only is it bad for them, but it’s also illegal to feed any wild animal in Zion.

What does the fox say?

The fox says nighttime is the best time at Zion! If you are thinking the summer days have been really hot, then a lot of the wildlife here would agree with you. This is why a lot of the animals in the park are nocturnal (active at night) or crepuscular (active at dawn or dusk). This includes animals like grey foxes, ringtails, beavers, owls, and bats.

Even though the last shuttle out of the canyon leaves at 8:15 p.m., there are still ways to explore Zion after dark. The Scenic Drive is open to bikes 24/7. You can also walk along the Pa’rus trail and see the animals that gather along the river at night. Be careful while driving at night though- frogs and tarantulas are often spotted along the roadways. Drive slowly to protect our wildlife!

Have you seen any nocturnal critters?
