We would like to thank each of the candidates who attended our Judicial Candidate Luncheon last week. Each candidate took the time to answer questions drafted by those in the room. This Q&A opportunity, provided by GRAWA, allowed for members of the public and members of our community to have their voices heard. We thank everyone who took the time to attend the event and hope you found it as valuable as we did!

A Message From our President:

As much as I am sad to see summer go, I am excited about the pending start of fall and the upcoming season change. I always notice a sense of energy at this time of the year, and that includes some exciting ways to engage with GRAWA over the coming months.

A few key dates to put on your calendar:
September 6: 12 - 1:30 p.m.: Part 2 of the free CLE series provided by the 7th JD Gender Fairness Committee in collaboration with the Susan B. Anthony Center. The topic is: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: Where the Science and Courts Meet. GRAWA is supporting this virtual event (see flyer below).

September 7: 6:00 - 9:30 p.m.: The Women's Foundation of the Genesee Valley's 30th Anniversary Celebration Gala. GRAWA members receive a discounted ticket price for supporting this event.

September 25: 12 - 2 p.m.: Keynote and panel featuring Hon. Joseph A. Zayas - in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The event is in-person or virtual and is provided by the Franklin H. Williams Judicial Commission and the 7th Judicial District’s Hispanic Heritage Month and Embracing Our Community Committees, as well as in partnership with GRAWA.

September 26: 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.: GRAWA’s New Member and Annual Membership Renewal Reception at Flight Wine Bar. The event is in-person.

We have much more planned for October, November, and December, so stay tuned for more information and details.

Before we close out this month of August (and hopefully head off to a long Labor Day weekend), I wanted to take a moment to recognize the GRAWA members and supporters recently named to the Daily Record’s 2024 Power 50 Law list. Congratulations!!! And that leads me to a request that I have for all members - the only way we Rise Together is to get more comfortable celebrating our own accomplishments and nominating outstanding colleagues, peers, or other GRAWA members to celebrate theirs. Do you know someone who has a new job or who was recently promoted? Let us know. Have you considered nominating someone or yourself (yes, yourself!) for any recent or upcoming awards? If not, when we circulate a request to nominate individuals for upcoming awards, please don't hesitate to throw their (or your) hat in the ring! We have an outstanding Nominations Committee that is always looking to nominate and highlight our amazing members!

Thank you for being part of this journey. Let’s continue to Rise Together.

A Joint Statement from Greater Rochester Association for Women Attorneys, Rochester Black Bar Association, and Monroe County Bar Association:

The Greater Rochester Association for Women Attorneys (GRAWA), the Rochester Black Bar Association (RBBA), and the Monroe County Bar Association (MCBA) congratulate Hon. Meredith V***a who was sworn in on Monday, August 5, as a United States District Judge for the Western District of New York. Judge V***a is the first woman of color and the first Asian American to be a judge for New York’s Western District.

In February, prior to the selection process, GRAWA, RBBA, and the MCBA sent a joint letter to Senator Charles Schumer urging him to make a recommendation for this judicial vacancy that enhances the diversity of the federal bench, and Judge V***a’s does just that.

Judge V***a’s confirmation is a historic moment and underscores the importance of creating a diverse bench in the Western District of New York and throughout the federal court system. We look forward to working with Senator Schumer’s office towards continuing the goal of a well-qualified, diverse judiciary that reflects the community that it serves.
