On this day 32 years ago, Nelson Mandela was released from prison.
It's important during black history month that we remember that the walk to freedom was long and hard.
But now, there is FREEDOM!
A much needed day of relaxation in Africa 😴 💆♀️
Spa days are a tradition with Ashtae getaways and this one DELIVERED! We had the WHOLE place to ourselves!
Special thanks to Santé Wellness Retreat and Spa! 🙌
We also made a pit stop at the place Nelson Mandela walked to freedom after spending years as a political prisoner. His long walk to freedom!
FREE AT LAST! 👊

It's important to never forget what happened on Robben Island and to ensure it never happens again.

Here's to more adventures in 2022!!!! 🌎
Starting with Capetown in just two weeks!! 🇿🇦
Here's a look back at some of our trips in the past few years!
Are you ready for more!? 😜
If you head to the beach in Cape Town in January...humans won't be the only beachgoers! 🐧
Boulders Bay in Cape Town, is home to a massive colony of African Penguins (nicknamed jackass penguins for their distinctive honking sounds).
You might see them on the beach or swimming nearby at Boulders Bay and Foxy Beach. 🏖
They are extremely endangered and are heavily protected.
Foxy beach has walkways specifically for tourists to get a good look at the penguins sun-bathing on the rocks and swimming! ☀️ 🌊
Thanks to conservation efforts that started in the 80's, this colony grew from just two eggs to 3,000 penguins! 🥚 🥚
The huge anchovy population in the waters certainly helps also!
Say hello to the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. 👋
One of the biggest draws to The Waterfront is THE FOOD! 🍲 🥘 🍱
From Braii (barbecue) to unique South African Sandwiches! 🥪
You're most likely going to find something you like!
If you're looking for some retail therapy, there are dozens of designer outlets to choose from, including Gucci!
You can also take in some contemporary African art at some nearby museums! 🖼 🎨
You can also take a ride on the signature Cape Wheel!
The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront draws close to 23 million visitors a year!
These colorfully painted houses are part of the famous and historic Bo-Kaap suburb in Cape Town.
This neighborhood is a big draw for tourists.
It practically has its own culture, a mix of Malaysian and South African.
Depending on who you ask, you could get several different explanations why the houses are painted so colorful.
Some say that the Indonesian Muslim families that lived there in the 1800’s didn’t get to wear colorful clothing, so they painted their houses vibrant colors.
Some say it’s to keep people from getting lost. There used to be no house numbers on the houses and none of the streets were named.
This is because the neighborhood was segregated during apartheid. The neighborhood was one of the few that allowed non-whites in the 1970’s. At that time…the government apparently couldn’t be bothered to number the houses or even name the streets. So the colored houses help people know where they were.
Other say the colored houses started AFTER apartheid ended in the 1990’s. The colored houses were a celebration of freedom at last.
What story do you believe or which one makes more sense to you?
We are less than 3 months away from our Ashtae Cape Town Getaway!!!!
