Today holds deep significance across Indigenous communities - marking both a day of mourning for Native American peoples and Lā KĆ«Ê»okoÊ»a, Hawaiian Independence Day. As we reflect on these histories and their ongoing impact, we’re reminded of our responsibility to support cultural preservation in the places where we work.
We’re profoundly grateful for our partners in Hawaii who are dedicated stewards of their lands and cultures. From Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners to community leaders across our destinations, these remarkable individuals and organizations show us daily how tourism can support rather than diminish indigenous rights, cultural preservation, and community well-being.
We’re honored to support their vital work and commit to being responsible partners in their mission to protect and preserve the places they call home. Mahalo to all our partners for their trust, wisdom, and leadership in showing us how travel can be a force for positive change.

In times of climate uncertainty, we choose hope through action.

Your choices matter. Whether you’re exploring new horizons or making changes at home, small shifts ripple outward. Let’s turn our concerns into positive action—one journey at a time.

We had a magical day with preparing for an all new Travaras exclusive experience, where we invited our guests to a coral nursery to learn how we need to protect these beautiful creatures to keep our oceans healthy, before going snorkeling.

Here’s what keeps me up at night: when we rely solely on viral travel tips and AI-generated itineraries, we’re not just contributing to over-tourism - we’re missing the very essence of what makes travel transformative. We’re all chasing the same photos, standing in the same lines, and leaving with identical experiences that barely scratch the surface of these incredible places.
The Iceland example here is just one of so many!
And it’s time to change the way we travel for the better. It’s time we stop chasing likes on our photos and allow ourselves to make our own memories, through deep, meaningful experiences.

It’s time to travel regeneratively.

Who is dreaming of their next vacation right now instep of powering through their to-do list?

Well, if you make it a regenerative one, you are basically doing good while you travel, no to-do list necessary
we call it win-win-win. Or simply say: let’s go!

We believe that knowing the story and culture of a place makes for a much richer and deeper experience. So before you discover the Waimea canyon, often referred to the Grand Canyon of Hawai‘i, know a few facts, and explore the little museum on top of Koke‘e for more. You could for example start with understanding the name: „Waimea“ comes from the Hawaiian words „wai“ (water) and „mea“ (red), referring to the red water that flows in the river after heavy rains.

We learned about this triangle by George Huʻeu Sanford Kanahele, a native Hawaiian activist, historian and author, at a recent event on regenerative travel.

According to his ideas, the way to embrace and sustain tourism requires finding balance between place, host and guests. This clearly states that if the focus on guests is too heavily emphasized, place becomes unbalanced and hosts unsatisfied (and much worse), which then results in a bad experience for the guests – so really, no one wins.

One very obvious example for this much needed balance is water. It doesn’t feel right that it goes to resorts and golf courses while local families have to conserve it. We need to find a way to restore balance between these three parts, which means drastically shifting the way people travel and the way locations engage with tourism.

We are here to help. Limited number of visitors, focus on better education and recommending the right activities so that local companies benefit and the tourism money stays in the right places and gets used to preserve and care for people and places in the destinations. Just some ideas

Traveling regeneratively doesn’t mean you have to work on a farm. You can still enjoy a relaxing beach vacation (if that’s your thing) and simply by choosing (or letting us recommend) the right businesses to support you can have an impact on the places and communities you visit.

Go, have fun, we’ll take care of the rest.

This article lead us down the rabbit hole of the brilliant thoughts on being a tourist. Her critique of the negative impact of mass tourism on local cultures, environments, and economies while highlighting tourism’s potential as a social force strongly resonated. She argues that tourists have the power to reshape perceptions and foster cultural understanding, and in her new book calls for a shift from self-centered travel to a more place-focused mindset, along with greater government regulation to mitigate tourism’s negative effects.

We are always so excited when we meet people who share our hope that there can be a new way of travel, a kinder, more regenerative way. So, this weeks newsletter feels like a special treat, when the author of the fabulous book The New Tourist, kindly answered some of our questions for tomorrow‘s edition.

Did you know that Aloha is written into the Hawai’ian state law? The Aloha Spirit law requires government and citizens to act in accordance with the Aloha Spirit, a cultural and spiritual code that encompasses kindness, unity, humility, patience, mutual regard and affection, coordination of mind and heart, and other lovely traits.
Imagine the whole world would abide by this law?

It’s important for visitors to come to Hawai‘i to not just expect this Aloha Spirit but embody it as well. That starts as simple as not honking, and letting others go first on the road, but more broadly, it means showing up with respect and curiosity to truly experience the beauty of this place and its people.
