Posted a new gallery to my site. Come visit and let me know what you think.

We visited the ruins of Presidents Head Park in Virginia. It only took me almost 10 years to remember to get tickets before we passed through the area for Thanksgiving.

But, we spend the evening exploring around the 42 concrete heads as they slowly decay. While they might not look large, they are.. Each are 15 to 20 feet tall. Luckily a local photographer, John Plashal, has worked to allow access to these forgotten works of art. He is also working to try and preserve the heads before they rot away forever.

2️⃣ Arrive with Accommodation Plans ⛺️

All campgrounds and lodging require a reservation and are usually full. No camping or overnight vehicle parking is allowed in pullouts, parking areas, picnic grounds, or any place other than a designated campsite in the park. If you don’t have a reservation, the nearest campsite or hotel room may be hours away, so have a plan before you arrive!

Charleston, SC is steeped in history, has amazing food, and is beautiful to boot!

Fort Sumter is where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. This made it an excellent roadschool opportunity for my homeschooling family.

No trip to Charleston is complete without a carriage tour of the historic downtown area.

And, our favorite place to stay there is at the campground in James Island County Park. Affordable, beautiful, and friendly staff. But don’t expect paved spots.

Horseshoe Bend in Page, AZ is one of those iconic postcard kind of places. And honestly, it’s as beautiful in person as it is in photos.

We were there 6 years ago and came back this year while exploring the southwest this spring. It’s changed a lot in that time with a slightly longer but gentler path from the parking area to the overlook and there’s a fenced off area at the overlook.

There’s a $10/car admission fee (there are different rates for different sized vehicles, I believe).

Zion National Park in southern Utah was absolutely gorgeous!

Established as a national park in 1956, it was previously a national monument. The red and white sandstone cliffs of southwestern Utah tower hundreds of feet above the Virgin River, which meanders through their network of narrow canyons. The heart of Zion National Park is a secluded canyon that lies amidst this striking landscape.

The wonderful part of southern Utah is the proximity to other national parks and so many beautiful sights to see.

Just a head's up- the next total solar eclipse that crosses America is coming on April 8, 2024. It sounds crazy to start planning a year+ in advance, but I would 100% recommend that you start considering where you'll be for it.

If you've experienced a solar eclipse before and it wasn't totality, you have no idea what you're missing. Those 1-4 minutes where the sun is totally blocked is literally breath taking and aww inspiring. Comparing it to a regular solar eclipse where the sun is 99.9% obscured is like comparing apples to a blue whale.

Eclipse2024.org has a good map showing the path of totality. FIND SOMEWHERE TO BE!

Let’s talk terms for a moment:

- Moochdocking - parking at family or friends in their driveway or yard
- Wallydocking - parking overnight at a Walmart or other retail establishment that is RVer friendly (Cabelas, Cracker Barrel, etc)
- Boondocking - camping outside of established campgrounds on public land with no hookups or amenities
- Dry Camping - camping at a campground with no hookups (no electric, water, or sewer); there may or may not be a water fill and/or dump station at the campground
- Partial Hookups - camping in a campground/RV park with electric but not water and/or sewer at your campsite
- Full Hookups - camping in a campground/RV park with electric, water, and sewer hookups

Each one has its advantages. What’s your favorite?

Mine has to be moochdocking because I love visiting with friends and family but still getting my bed to go sleep in!

Also, if you’re headed to Roswell, Bottomless Lakes State Park is stunning! We are in their dry camping spots but they have full hookup spots available, too.

I can’t help it. If you put up enough billboards on my drive, I’m *going to* stop. And the dumber, the better. If you’ve driven I-10 out west, you know what I’m talking about.

We stopped and checked it out back in 2016 when we were first on the road and just stopped again after realizing that A, my son didn’t remember it and B, it was remodeled in 2018!

Best and weirdest $10 I’ve spent in a while.

I’m using RV Parky to plan out 2023. I swear, I’ve got to be our toughest client- doing things that we wouldn’t recommend others:

1, don’t try and do it all - there’s only so many miles and so many hours in a day
2, when possible, stick to 250-300 miles max as you’ll travel at about 45-50 mph overall
3, do take a logical route and don’t zig zag
4, don’t forget to stop and smell the roses!

Fortunately, we have time on our side. We are starting in January 1 and the map runs through to the end of June. I still need to plan out that last 29-30 leg to break it into things we want to see and bite-sized legs.

Where are you planning to visit in 2023?

If you’re in Anaheim, consider staying at Orangeland RV Park and definitely eating at Tacos Los Cholos. We liked it so much that we went back twice within a week. They have an amazing keto taco where they make the shell out of cheese. You pick from a dozen types of meats (regular, premium, and prime). Ordering from the Prime side of things can get expensive but holy heck is it good!

We are staying at the Thousand Trails Palms Springs RV Park (hooray for $0/night stays!) and drove over to Joshua Tree National Park. Being Thanksgiving week, the crowds were quite high but we still got out and explored a little. Beautiful park!

Did you know, Joshua trees were named by the early Mormon settlers as the branches reminded them of the prophet Joshua with his upswept arms?

Reheating a little bit of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan today. When we were there a couple of weeks ago, we bought some frozen pasties from Muldoon’s in Munising during our Muldoon’s vs. Miner’s Pasty Showdown.

Today, it’s time to heat one up. Just wish I had gravy…

Not all campsites are pretty. Lambert’s Cafe in Ozark. MO has its own RV park behind the restaurant. It’s plan, kind of ugly, but it works. Self-pay kiosk at the office but you have to call a number to have someone come unlock the electric box for you. We got here on a Saturday, on a holiday weekend, right in the middle of the dinner rush. The RV park manager was gone and we had to wait for someone in the restaurant to find a minute to make it over. Took 2 calls and nearly and hour.

I recently got to fulfill a bucket list of mine of taking our RV onto a ferry! We crossed on the Cape May Lewes Ferry. We are 62’ bumper to bumper and paid $132. Honestly, at 6.5 mpg and tolls, the cost was about the same. Time-wise, our arrival time was about the same, as well. And the ferry was way less stress!

Our 48v battery + twin Quattro 5000 inverters ran the A/C for us and the cats beautifully as you’re not allowed to have engines on during the crossing.
