in 1862, Lydia Kamakaeha P**i and John O Dominis, His Majesty’s (Kamehameha IV) private Secretary were married at 8 p.m. at the home of the bride’s hanai sister, Mrs. Charles Reed Bishop.

Multiple 20th century biographies of have erroneously reported that the mother of the groom, Mary Dominis, was not present. By examining English and Hawaiian language newspaper reports we can compile a thorough list of those who were present, including notably Mary Dominis. Also witness to the wedding: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Reed Bishop, the bride’s parents and brother David Kalakaua, His Majesty King Kamehameha IV, Governor Kekuanaoa, Princess Victoria, Prince Lot Kamehameha, Governess Ruth of Hawaii Island, Dowager Queen Emma, Peter Young Kekuaokalani, and Elizabeth Kekaaniau Laanui, as well as other native noblemen and chiefs.

Among the foreigners present were Mr. Wylie (Minister of Foreign Affairs), Mr. J. H. Brown and Miss M. Swinton, William A. Aldrich and lady, Amos S. Cooke and lady, and others. Mr. and Mrs. Cooke had been Lydia’s teachers at the Chiefs’ Children’s School. William A. Aldrich was married to John Owen Dominis’ first cousin, Elizabeth and a business partner of Charles Reed Bishop.

Learn about the Hawaiian moon cycle for ‘Aukake 🌝

In the traditional Hawaiian calendar, the 29.5-day mahina (moon) cycle is divided into three anahulu (10-day periods): ho‘onui (growing bigger), beginning on the first visible crescent; poepoe (round or full); and emi (decreasing). The traditional names of the Hawaiian moon months and phases may vary by island and moku (district). This calendar uses the O‘ahu moon phases listed in the Hawaiian Almanac by Clarice Taylor.
