Taipei 101. To build a 101-story building in a place contending with both strong typhoons and 7+ magnitude earthquakes requires some unusual engineering. When this building was completed in 2004 it was the world’s tallest inhabited building. Taiwanese architects came up with an ingenious solution for the building called a tuned mass damper. It is a 728 ton sphere of thick steel plates suspended by 16 huge cables from the 92nd floor down to 87th floor with computer controlled dampers attached to the bottom. When the building is struck by strong gusts or strong earthquakes, the sphere sways to offset the buildings movement, reducing the building sway by about 40%. The building is designed to flex under impact. The foundation is supported by 380 pilings that reach up to 98 feet into bedrock, capable of carrying 1100 to 1460 tons each.
The architecture also included a lot of Chinese symbolism. The segmented exterior recalls that of a pagoda, or a stalk of bamboo shoot. There are shapes of squares and circles to reach a balance of ying and yang. Ruyi (scepter) figures are used as a design motif. The evening exterior lighting uses the seven colors of the spectrum to coincide with the seven days of the week. The building exterior curtain walls are blue-green glass, double paned. Height fearers are reassured that these windows can sustain an 8-ton impact. Although there is a lot of tradition here, the rendering in industrial metal is plainly modern. By any measure it is an impressive building, both structurally and esthetically.
In the first picture is a model of the building. At no time was I in a position to get a photo of the actual exterior. The second photo shows the huge tuned mass damper. It swung 39 inches during a 2015 typhoon and 6 inches during a 7.3 magnitude earthquake. The 3rd photo shows the supporting structures visible from the first floor. The 4th photo shows some much shorter, but unique neighboring buildings from the observation deck.

If it is uniqueness you seek when you travel, then pay especial attention to the museums; it is here that the locals display their best and most characteristic of their artifacts. In Taiwan, the best is the National Palace Museum where China's best artifacts have been curated for over 4000 years. The Museum has 700,000 items. It is estimated they would bring several trillion US dollars if auctioned. We were given 90 minutes on our tour; we would have needed 90 days to get just an overview. The first picture shows a jeweled vessel. The second is a 7th century painting on silk. The most visited display is the Jadeite Cabbage which uses the natural colors of the jade, skillfully cut, to make a very realistic Chinese cabbage. The kettle is a 4000 year old artifact. There was no discussion on techniques possibly used to get such an accurately made bronze article without machining or injection molding. Interesting fact: over half the visitors to the Museum are tourists from the People's Republic of China.

For a small Island Taiwan has some tall mountains, up to nearly 13,000 feet. Thus Taiwan's top tourist draw is Taroko Gorge, thru the middle of Taroko National Park. It is kind of a drive-thru Chinese painting. The Gorge srises above the blue-green Liwu River and all that light-colored rock you see in the photos is marble, not chalk or limestone. The mist, the lush vegetation, and the waterfalls make a classic landscape. In the 2nd photo, those who follow painter Beverly Doolittle will notice the profile of an Indian chief formed on the canyon wall. The monastery above the waterfalls has a creek directed thru its campus. Knowing that rock layers are formed flat, I find twisting in the marble above the the river curious.
