One of the most difficult parts about photographing lunge-feeding humpback whales is predicting when they will, well, lunge! Thankfully, this vastly connected system can help give us some clues to know where and when to capture the action. We'll follow the patterns and behavior of birds like Western gulls, Brown Pelicans and Sooty Shearwaters as well as hungry herds of sea lions to track these whales and their feeding movements. Nature is so cool!

Our Humpbacks & Sea Otters of Monterey tour begins September 25. Two spots left to join us on this exciting adventure, in partnership with Fast Raft Ocean Safaris!

Y'all, if you haven't seen a whale lunge-feeding, put it at the top of your bucket list. When the anchovies are popping in Monterey Bay, humpback whales employ a very effective feeding strategy to take advantage of this nutritious prey in bulk. They use a series of impressive adaptations, one of which they share with other rorqual whales like blue whales and fin whales, for example. These grooves you can see on their throats, also called ventral grooves or pleats, expand kind of like a giant parachute or accordian, letting them engulf up to 70% of their body weight in water and tiny fish! Dragging and filtering that much water takes a lot of energy, but the result is a big, giant gulp of highly nutritious meal!

What other adaptations can you name that allow humpbacks to lunge-feed like this?

Our Humpbacks & Sea Otters of Monterey tour will be September 25-30 and we've got 2 spots left!

Fun fact: Sebastian Kennerknecht Photography 's favorite bird is the Brown Pelican, and it's one of the more than 300 bird species we'll have the opportunity to see on our Humpbacks & Otters of Monterey Tour. We'll see them in droves from our kayaks, and often the'll soar right by, just barely tickling the surface of the water, which never ceases to amaze us! One of the best parts of this tour, is you'll have someone paddling your kayak into position for you, so you can focus on getting the shot!

What birds would you hope to see if you joined this trip?

When it comes to finding whales in Monterey Bay, Fast Raft Ocean Safaris is hands down our favorite choice for intimate, eye-level encounters aboard their 33-ft RIB, ‘Ranger.’ This September, is thrilled to partner with for our Humpbacks & Sea Otters of Monterey photography tour.

We’ll enjoy three full days on the water with Captain Kate Spencer and her team, experts in finding lunge-feeding humpbacks, other marine mammals and birds! And, we’ll spend a day photographing Sea Otters from kayaks at sunrise and sunset, where each guest will have a dedicated paddler to help them get the perfect shot.

Other tour highlights: learn more about photo editing in Lightroom, learn about Monterey Bay’s whales from a local cetacean biologist, and relax at our beautiful oceanside hotel.

$1,000 from this tour will be donated to Whale Safe, a platform that helps prevent fatal ship collisions with endangered whales, like humpbacks.
