UPDATED AS OF 11/3/2023
Parts of the New River Trail are closed due to major renovation work that necessitated the closing of several bridges along the trail. The work is part of a three-phase project that will take several months to complete.
Preface: We've linked maps at the end of this caption, but your best resource is a park ranger when trying to navigate the closures. If you need help planning your route, please call the park office at 276-699-6778 (open Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., closed state holidays), if you cannot reach us by phone, email your questions to [email protected] and we will get back to you ASAP.
The project will impact the following sections of the trail:
US 52 Bridge: Repairs are underway and require a temporary lane closure on US 52; however, no trail closure is anticipated.
Ivanhoe River & Ivanhoe bridges: The trail is closed from the south end of the Ivanhoe Bridge to the Austinville access. This closure will likely be in place through the first quarter of next year.
Big Branch Bridge: Repairs are scheduled to begin on November 13, 2023, and will require a trail closure from Buck Dam access to the Ivanhoe Bridge. This closure will likely be in place through the first quarter of next year.
Brush Creek Bridge: Repairs are underway and require a trail closure from Fries Junction to the Byllesby Dam access. This closure is expected to last through the week of November 13, 2023.
After Brush Creek Bridge reopens in mid-November, there will only be one continuous trail closure in effect from Buck Dam access to Austinville access. This closure is expected to be in place through at least January, possibly longer.
Galax to Cliffview: This section of trail is now open.
Double Shoals Bridge: This section of trail is now open.
Fries School Bridge: This section of trail is now open.
