Honest review of the activities done this past trip.
Went to Williamsburg, VA for a short trip to see the "changing of the leaves" and history....Wed Oct 23 - Sat Oct 26....there were pretty colors but still not at peak season. The town of is spread out ... will take you 30 mins to go from north of town to the ferry and not due to traffic.
will take all day. Go to the Visitor Center and ride the shuttle. You do not need a ticket to view the Visitor Center or walk Colonial Willamsburg but to see the shows or house tours you will. Parking is free in the paid parking by the Colonial area after 6pm. Parking is an issue, so do go early but recommend going to the Visitor Center for the free shuttle for daytime visiting. Different experiences in daytime and nighttime.
Only need to do one "tour" in the downtown area....they all incorporate the colonial area and are pretty much the same stories. **Williamsburg Ghosts, Witches and Pirates Tour - our guide really involved the whole croward into the tour....she didn't just tell us a story, she showed us a story. LOTS of walking but weather was nice. **The Murder Tour & Pub Crawl - our guide was quiet knowledgable. My disappointment was I was expecting a pub crawl with history about the murders that happened at the pubs or in that area - not a walk into Colonial Williamsburg and history of that area with a few "murders" thrown in....then a walk back to downtown to have three drinks at three different bars without any history connected to that bar or that area.
**Segway tours - we did 4 all together. One was in Yorktown - Patriot Segway - LOVED this tour! I highly recommend doing this before they close up this section of their activities. Best way to see the area. LOTS to see and learn. Bonus - we saw a submarine in the river!
**Did 2 with Williamsburg on Wheels but those are just riding a Segway around the bike/walking trails out by the Jamestown Settlement park - well, you ride out and back on the same route. Would suggest doing an e-bike instead of a segway. However, they did have speakers in the helmets which was a first.
**Last Segway was in Richmond - RVA On Wheels. It was a GREAT tour of the downtown area. Our guide was AWESOME! Best way to see a lot of the downtown area.
**We did a sunset tour while in Yorktown - Yorktown's Sailing Tours on the Schooner Alliance II. Ship is beautiful and crew was amazing. Timing for the the sunset was perfect and loved the little touch of firing the cannon at sunset.
**Freedom Park/botancial gardens - is free and well worth the trip. Pretty foliage and plenty of history. Looked be more a great place to hike and ride bikes plus there is a zipline experience company onsight for a fee. Plenty for the kids to enjoy too.
**Nothing to write home about in Williamsburg for places to eat but be prepared to PAY for it. BUT Yorktown - I highly recommend the Yorktown Tavern on the waterfront. It too wil cost, but it is fresh food not fast food.
So, when you are ready to take a tour, give me a call.
