So much of travel is about the historical, contextual, and relationship of one site/city/event to other events of the past or present. I really do enjoy traveling in the footsteps of the Apostle Paul. Something about listening to the history and importance of Macedonia and then reading Acts 16 in the agora of Philippi followed by singing in the acoustically-enhanced dome-roofed Basilica of Saint Lydia brings the story of Paul there to life. It is meaningful and has a long-lasting affect. And then doing basically the same thing in the other cities to follow (minus the great acoustics of the basilica).

But another fantastic part of travel is experiencing the wonderful food of the places you visit. Israeli falafel; Turkish tea; Greek gyros, Italian pasta and gelato; German bratwurst; French crepes; British fish and chips; and so much more... And so much about what makes these meals special is the location, atmosphere, and other dinner guests.

My family occasionally plays a game that we call "I'm thinking of a meal." In this game, the other participants ask questions to try and narrow down the options and guess the exact meal. The person who is "thinking of the specific meal" can only answer "yes" or "no." For instance, here are some potential questions and answers:

Did the meal happen in Asia? No
Did the meal take place in Europe? Yes
Did the meal take place in Eastern Europe? No
Did the meal take place in southern Europe? No
Did the meal take place in northern Europe? Yes
Did the meal take place with just our family? No
Did the meal take place with a travel group? Yes
Did the meal take place at night? Yes
Did the meal take place outside? No
Was there live music during the meal? Yes
Did the meal take place in a historical venue? Yes
Was this meal in a large city? Yes
Did we sit at really long tables? Yes
(Now, once you think you know the meal, you can start asking really specific questions:)
Did Adolf Hi**er deliver several speeches in this place? Yes
Did the menu offer a variety of sausages, pork knuckles, and wiener schnitzel? Yes
Is it the meal we ate at the Hofbrauhaus in Munich, Germany? Yes

We will have several memorable meals together on the Apostle Paul tour. After the trip, you might be playing this game with some of the following meals:

"I'm thinking of a meal..."
Did this meal take place in Europe? Yes
Did it happen in northern Europe? No
Southern Europe? Yes
Was it on the Apostle Paul tour? Yes
Was this one of the meals we had by ourselves, just the two of us? No
Did we eat this meal with our group? Yes
Did this meal take place in Greece? Yes
Did this meal take place in a historical setting? Yes
Was the meal inside? No
Were we in a crowded area? No
Did we have a great view during the meal? Yes
Was there freshly squeezed orange juice served with the meal? Yes
Did we walk away from the meal wishing we had been able to eat more food? No
Is that because we had more than we could eat offered to us? Yes
Were we able to see temples from our table while eating? Yes
Was the meal at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the ancient grounds of Corinth and the Temple of Apollo with the acro-Corinth in the background? Yes

Or this one:
Did this meal take place in Europe? Yes
Was it in southern Europe? Yes
Did the meal take place at the first of our Apostle Paul trip? No
Was it in Italy? Yes
Was the meal in Rome? No
Was the meal at a restaurant down a very small side street? Yes
Were mainly locals eating there? Yes
Was there a menu in English? Yes
Was it very close to the Cathedral? Yes
Did we eat "Nidi" fresh pasta stuffed with pecorino cheese and honey on top? Along with roasted pork tenderloin with local balsamic sauce, fresh cherry tomatoes, and capers? Yes
Was it the meal on our day trip to Orvieto? Yes

If you are like me, food is very important during travel. We will have several meals that you will remember for years to come!

Yesterday, I went to a friend's house to pick up a smoked butt (pork) that had been in his smoker all day long. He lives close to our house, so I took our yellow lab, Bella, for a walk before I picked the pork up on the way home. As Bella and I made our way toward his house, the smell hit us hard as it seemed to affect the whole neighborhood. It smelled so good and made us both very hungry (of course, Bella is always hungry!). I had flashbacks to our time living in Greece.

Today is Orthodox Easter! So, if you were to visit Greece today you would see smoke from just about every balcony or backyard of homes. The Greeks smoke a lamb on a spit all day long on Easter. I remember walking out on our balcony (3rd floor) at the complex we lived in and thinking that 90% of the houses had a grill going that day. The smell was fantastic, too! The Greeks know how to cook great food! I woke up this morning to a message from a friend in Greece who will be our bus driver for our Apostle Paul tour. He sent me pictures of his family grilling their lamb today.

Thessaloniki is the culinary and musical capital of Greece, and this friend knows the best restaurants to visit for food and atmosphere. It will be a wonderful experience to spend two nights just a short walk from Aristotle Square in the heart of the city.

By the way, the pork butt was delicious!
