Boudhanath is visible as soon as you land at the Tribhuvan International Airport, it is the largest stupa in the Kathmandu Valley and it is the center of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal.

Take an early morning or evening stroll around the inspiring white dome buzzing with energy; observe the devout people circumambulating, light a butter lamp and say a little prayer, look around for souvenirs, or enjoy the view from a rooftop restaurant with a coffee in hand. Boudhanath is always full of life.

Kyzyl-Oi is quite different from the other mountain villages in Kyrgyzstan. It existed even before the Great Socialist Revolution, and miraculously has kept its distinct Central Asian character with its reddish clay houses.

Since Kyrgyz people are traditionally nomadic and didn’t typically settle down prior to the Soviets, this village is a bit of a rarity.

Officially named Omoide Yokocho (Memory Alley), but more commonly referred to as P**s Alley, this is a class “ghetto” dining and drinking experience. Infeasibly small yakitori shacks and izakaya are sandwiched next to each other along a narrow and very greasy walkway.

This area has retained much of the post-war charm often lost in the shiny modern metropolis of Tokyo; each night presents the possibility of an adventure into the unknown and unexpected.

Aside from the scenery, Inle Lake is also known for an unusual method of fishing practised by the Intha fishermen.

Inle Lake is located in central Myanmar. At 22 miles long it’s the country’s second largest lake and, it’s home to nine species of fish that are found nowhere else in the world.

Candy Crabs are about 1.5 to 2 cm. They live on various species of soft coral in the genus and camouflage themselves by mimicking the colors of the polyps among which they hide. Candy Crabs add further camouflage by attaching polyps to their carapace.

Colors vary depending on the color of the coral, and may be white, pink, yellow or red.

Unlike its name implies, a snake eel is not a snake. It is a fish! This cylinder shaped fish can grow up to 7 feet. Its sharp, pointy tail accounts for more than half of its body length. Their snakelike bodies swim in a side-to-side motion called anguilliform locomotion. This movement allows the snake eel to swim forwards and backwards.

Just below the island pictured is one of the most biodiverse dives in all of the Bird’s Head Seascape, Cape Kri.

This region is the epicenter of marine biodiversity in the world. The waters of West Papua, Indonesia teem with life and boast phenomenally high concentrations of marine species including: manta rays, whale sharks and sea turtles. It is one of the most compelling conservation victories.

Moray eels have two sets of jaws. Rather than using suction to consume food, as most fish do, morays use a hidden pair of pharyngeal jaws to thrust forward and grasp the prey once it has been trapped by the eel’s oral jaws.

I wonder if these were the inspiration used for Ridley Scott’s horror film, Alien...?

Flabellina nudibranch (a type of sea slug). They eat animals like hydroids and anemones, then store the stinging cells (nematocysts) in their cerata (that pretty orange stuff on their back) as a form of defense against predators.
