A couple of weeks ago we featured a photo of an aircraft carrier in West Grand Traverse Bay, stating that it had been converted from the Side-wheeled steamship, SeeandBee.
We were a bit in awe at the huge number of 'likes' and 'shares' that it got!
But.....there were a few comments that suggested that it was all a hoax, that there were never any aircraft carriers on The Great Lakes. Sort of like the whale migration to Lake Michigan, I guess.
Well, we present today's photo, circa 1943-45, of the USS Sable, sister ship of the USS Wolverine to see if we can win over those last hold-outs.
The USS Sable had been the side-wheeling steamship, S.S. Greater Buffalo. She joined the Wolverine in 1943 and together they became known as "Freshwater Flattops", or "The Corn Belt Fleet".
The Sable also helped out the Navy in the development of its secret 'drone airplane' program (headquartered here in Traverse City). The idea was to have a fleet of pilotless, heavily armed, drones, remote- controlled, to fly over enemy territory and dive bomb, as it were. If you had stowed-away on one of these you had a one-way ticket!
The caption for today's photo is: "Drone airplane being loaded on board the USS Sable (we are not told if it had been fished out of the water by a trailing tugboat, but that is the assumption), an aircraft carrier in West Grand Traverse Bay. The Sable was once a side-wheeled passenger steamship, named the S.S.Greater Buffalo. It was converted to a carrier and used for new pilots to practice take-offs and landings, as well as helping the Navy's secret "drone planes' program."
As for proof of W. Grand Traverse Bay? To the right of the plane's tail section you can make out the tower of the Traverse City State Bank; and straight ahead of the ship is the 10-story Park Place Hotel.
