Irish stew was invented in the 1800s as a food for lower-class people. During that time, potatoes, onions, and mutton were easy to come by and had to be cooked using lower temperatures (because the meat was tough).

Today, Irish stew is a popular Irish dinner recipe and is served on Saint Patrick’s Day. Beef and lamb are used more widely. Some people also add carrots to the stew.
