There is something incredibly majestic about sea turtles. Their gentle temperature. Their adorable faces. The fact that they have been around since the beginning of time! It’s no wonder we get asked, literally, all the time, about where to spot sea turtles when visiting the Big Island. Before we tell you our secrets, a few things we want to cover just a few things first. What to expect: While there are about 7 different types of sea turtles, the one you will most likely see on the Big Island is the green turtle. This type of turtle is known for swimming close to shore, and even coming onto shores for some sun basking. These turtles can get up to 250 pounds, live to be 60-80 years old on average, but are sadly, endangered. Which leads us to….. How to behave around sea turtles: They are amazing. We get it. It’s super tempting to get out the camera, get up close and personal and get the ultimate selfie. But please, respect our turtles. If you happen to be lucky enough to see a turtle in the water or on land, do not approach or block its movement. Stay back at least 10 feet (3 meters). Touching a turtle is not allowed under any circumstances. In fact, touching its shell removes beneficial bacteria and can be harmful to the turtle. Do not feed or tempt the turtle in any way. Remember that they are protected by federal and local laws. Turtles can be seen at any time in the day. They eat and rest all day long (like us). But they do prefer calmer waters.
