As we get closer to Halloween, we enjoy hearing spooky ghost stories & folklore. The story of Alice Flagg is pretty famous and takes place right here in Murrells Inlet!

Alice Flagg, the daughter of a prominent family, grew up in her family home in The Hermitage neighborhood right here in Murrells Inlet. As Alice grew to be a young woman, she fell in love with a turpentine salesman. Her family disapproved of the relationship and sent Alice away to a college further inland of South Carolina. Before leaving town, her love gave her an engagement ring which she wore around her neck as a necklace.
While away at college, Alice fell ill and was brought back home to Murrells Inlet. Her illness grew increasingly worse. One day, her father found the necklace with the engagement ring attached and he angrily flung it into the ocean.
Unfortunately, Alice would soon pass away and would never get the chance to marry her beloved salesman. Legend has it that Alice haunts the Grand Strand, searching for her necklace & ring. If you ever visit Alice Flagg's grave at All Saints Waccamaw Episcopal Church Cemetery, you will find that people leave rings on the headstone as a tribute.
