View the majestic Misty Fjords National Monument by air...truly the only way to appreciate the grandeur and beauty that is home to some of Alaska's most impressive scenery. After pickup right at your Ketchikan cruise ship pier, transfer a short distance to the floatplane dock. Here you will meet your pilot and after check-in, board your DeHavilland Beaver floatplane. Everyone has a window seat on
this 4 to 6 seater/passenger plane! Before you know it, you are gliding across the waters of the Tongass Narrows and lifting off into the sky. Watch Ketchikan disappear behind you as your pilot heads 40 miles (64 kilometers) east over the Tongass National Forest to reach Misty Fjords National Monument. The monument covers about 3,570 square miles (9,246 square kilometers) making it more than twice the size of Rhode Island. Only by air can you fully do justice to this dramatic blending of land and water. From your window seat, you will be able to take in the ever-changing vistas while listening to the pilot's narration through your individual headsets. Follow your flight route on the provided detailed map and guide. The Misty Fjords were carved by nature over tens of thousands of years. Massive glacier action created the majestic fjords, cascading waterfalls and the jewel-like lakes you will see. Fly past sheer walls of granite plunging over 3,000 feet (914 meters) into the fjords, over lush forests of spruce, hemlock, and cedar and look for wildlife crossing the snowcapped peaks. The rugged Misty Fjords terrain is home to a multitude of wildlife. At lower levels, the astute observer may be rewarded with sightings of brown and black bear, Sitka black-tailed deer, wolves or a moose. At higher elevations, see bald eagles, and Big Goat Lake and its 1,000-foot waterfall. Named for the region's concentration of mountain goats, colonies of these marvelous high mountain creatures can often be spotted and photographed from the air. After this once in a lifetime experience, your pilot will return to Ketchikan for a waterfront landing where you will transfer back to your Ketchikan cruise ship pier.
