Visit Fusterlandia, a bright, colorful neighborhood in Havana where José Rodríguez Fuster moved in 1975 and eventually transformed the area from a rundown fishing village into a work of art. Fuster started by decorating his own house and studio with brightly colored mosaic and painted tiles. He then started asking his neighbors if he could turn their houses into works of art too; more and more people agreed. He drew inspiration for his neighborhood from Gaudi in Barcelona and Brancusi in Romania. You may also purchase works of art.

On our Discovery tour you are going to have an ‘under the hood’ experience at the workshop of a family-owned and operated business dedicated to the restoration of American classic cars from the 1950’s. During the visit you will see the shop, meet the mechanics, and pose behind the wheel with the likes of Lola (a pink 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air), Nadine (a blue 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air), or Benny (a black 1959 Chevrolet Impala convertible). You will meet Julio, the owner, and enjoy his stories that are not just about Chevys from the ‘50s.

In the gritty Regla neighborhood, across Habana Harbor, is the Church of Our Lady of Regla, the Black Madonna. It is one of the best-known holy spots in Cuba where devout followers of Santeria worship. It is also a functioning Catholic church where Santería worshipers, dressed in white, can be seen performing their dances to the Saints while a Catholic priest celebrates Mass. A small Santería shrine, adjacent to the church, has a replica of the Black Madonna, as is displayed above the Catholic church’s main altar, who in Santería is called Yemayá.

From the streets of Guanabacoa, a colonial township in eastern Havana, across the Bay. Most visitors don't get there, but I wanted to check it out. Guanabacoa was briefly the capital of Cuba in 1555 after Havana was attacked by a French pirate. This gave rise to the Cuban saying “Like putting Havana in Guanabacoa,” which is used to describe trying to fit something too large into a space too small.

Beatriz Santacana - Estudio Taller Santacana

We visit and many now have her pieces in their homes.

Visit the Studio and Workshop of Beatriz Sala Santacana in the trendy Miramar area of Ambassador Residences. Her work depicts everyday people as the main characters and brings attention to the conflicts and experiences that shape societies, with a hopeful outlook. In a unique exhibition of her ceramic sculptures, paintings, and drawings you will have a relaxing time and discussion with the artist. Also on display are her ceramic murals, plates, vases, glazed tiles, and mosaics.

Dinner at San Cristobal Paladar, regarded as one of Havana’s finest restaurants. It is cluttered and eclectic. This lived-in space is on the bottom floor of an early 20th-century mansion with piles of old books stacked atop beautiful antique furniture; black and white photos jostle for space with vintage record covers and bullfighting posters, while a selection of clocks, religious artefacts and even a full-size zebra pelt, add to the mix. As a footnote in history, it is where President Obama and family enjoyed dinner their first night in Havana on his historic visit to the island.

A few weeks ago, I had lunch in Cienfuegos on Punta Gorda at Restaurant Villa Lagarto which offers a beautiful view of the bay and fantastic food.

Cienfuegos is acclaimed as the best example of Neoclassical architecture in the Caribbean, and it's very much worth visiting.

Our Story

Dan Rutherford served as International Vice President of the ServiceMaster Company for 25 years, a Fortune 100, as well as an elected Legislator and Constitutional Officer. He traveled to all Seven Continents before he was 40 years old and has visited over 70 countries. Dan’s first trip to Cuba was in 1999. Few have been to Antarctica, canoed down the Orinoco to the Amazon, led safaris in Kenya, visited the top of the world in Tibet and logged hundreds of dives as a Master Scuba diver. Dan has.

Cuba was once the playground for Americans who loved to live life on the edge. It had casinos, cheap flights and Cuban ci**rs. In 1959 Revolutionaries toppled the U.S. backed dictator and that all changed. Six decades later Cuba is still a hotbed of intrigue for its neighbor ninety miles to the north. Dan Rutherford and Global Relations will take you there.
