The Blue Mountain Barrel House is one of the largest barrel aging facilities on the East Coast, and we got to take a tour! This special place is comprised of a restaurant, brewery, barrel house and bottling facility that sit on 15 beautiful acres in the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. In the brewery, brewmasters adjust the alkalinity and salinity of the water to make ensure that it is perfect for each of the beers they brew. After the fermentation process is complete, the beers are aged in whiskey or rum barrels that are stored in the barrel house. The barrel house exudes a strong aroma of sour mash and hint of cinnamon. After each beer is aged to perfection, they then get bottled or kegged right there in the same facility. You can try these delicious craft brews in the Smokin Barrel Restaurant along with some of their famous smoked meat, or indulge on their observation deck and watch the process start all over.

About Us

We are a family of 4 who live in Cary, North Carolina. Matt and I were both born and raised in Canada (in Ottawa and Halifax). Lucie and Felix were both born in North Carolina, and are dual citizens. Matt and I have been together for over half of our lives. We met at a science and technology camp for high school students, went to university together, lived together and traveled all over the world for awhile, and this year we celebrated our 13th year of marriage.

Both kids have traveled internationally before their first birthdays - Lucie to France, and Felix to Australia. We learned early on that staying in hotels with kids was not that enjoyable. Once they went to bed, our night was over, too. Meals at restaurants with young kids take such a long time, and they burn out pretty quickly. We started renting vacation homes instead, and found our trips to be much more enjoyable.

I’m a huge lover of winter and snow sports, which I miss, living in the South. In order to have a little more winter in our lives, we decided to purchase our first vacation home - partly to use as a family, but also to host other families to help them have joyful family vacations. We fell in love with Wintergreen Resort during our first visit, and within the next couple of months, Mountain Memories Condo was born!

In the two years that we have owned and operated Mountain Memories Condo, we have been blessed with the most amazing guests. My favorite part of it all is the personal connections we make with guests. Being able to help with their vacation plans, learn about special events in their lives, and share a space and an area that we truly love, we feel we bring a positive impact to our guests and their vacation planning.
