Did you know the park is full of history? Sometimes it can be lost in the wow moments of the beauty of the park. However, the park has been entrusted to protect and preserve that history and we hope to do that through our “Monday's Memories” series. So, join us each week as we dive into our historical archives and learn a little more about this great place!

Monday’s Memories – April 8, 2024

History of the Sunday Gulch Trail

Did you know that Sunday Gulch trail got its name from the miners' wives back in the 1890s? They used to take leisurely strolls along this path to soak in its serene beauty on simple Sunday afternoons. Picture this: rugged granite spires, jagged rocks, and a babbling stream winding its way through rocky passages – it's like stepping into a natural wonderland!

From towering trees to delicate mosses, this trail is bursting with life. No wonder it snagged the title of National Recreation Trail in 1971!

Back in the day, Theodore Reder decided to dam the gulch's mouth, giving birth to Sylvan Lake. While it changed the landscape a bit, today the stream still spills over the dam, creating cozy habitats for brown trout in its deep pools.

Oh, and a heads up – due to ice and snow, the trail takes a winter hiatus for safety reasons. But come spring, it's ready and waiting for your next adventure!

John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum, sculptor of Mt. Rushmore, was born on March 25, 1867 in St Charles, Idaho Territory. Borglum designed a number of sculptures around the United States, including the North Carolina Monument, The Aviator, and Rabboni. Borglum passed away in 1941 and is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, California next to his second wife, Mary Montgomery Williams Borglum.

All our bedding and towels are laundered with fragrance free, gentle laundry detergent, and dried with dryer balls, not dryer sheets!

Our family has a lot of experience with laundry product allergies (looking at you Bounce dryer sheets) disrupting our vacations. Hideout is a place for everyone to rest comfortably!
