I recently had a conversation with someone who, like many others, had been planning their own trips for years under the assumption that engaging a travel agent would increase their travel expenses.

As I interact with my clients and assist them in planning their journeys, I sometimes lose sight that not everyone knows the extraordinary benefits a travel advisor can bring to their trips.

This is an expensive travel mistake to make in 2024 👇

It will be busy everywhere: Europe, the Caribbean, and cruises.

And you’re rolling the dice with your travel budget by booking everything yourself (your time costs money, but that’s a conversation for another day!)

Booking everything online means you’re the backup, the problem solver, and the person you’ll have to rely on if flights get missed, the hotel bumps your booking, or the tour guide doesn’t show.

All of this can add up to hard-earned money lost.

When you work with me to plan, you not only avoid costly travel mistakes — things like booking flights for the wrong airport, booking hotels for bad dates, etc.

There are so many places to travel, and only 365 days in a year!

So how do you narrow it down? Ask yourself these four questions!

❓What do you not get enough of every day?
Some people need rest, others want more adventure.

❓How much time do you have?
How many PTO days do you have, and how can you maximize them?

❓How much money can you spend?
An important consideration when deciding

❓What weather makes you happy?
Some like it hot, others need to escape the stifling humidity.

These questions are a great way to narrow down the list a little.

5 of my best tips to get you through yet another crazy travel year:

✈️ Book those flights well in advance. At least three to four months in advance for international trips and six to eight weeks for domestic trips.

🛫 Avoid basic economy fares. Friends don’t let friends book basic economy, and friends definitely don’t let friends end up with added fees and no chance of a refund in case plans need to change.

🔎 Avoid online travel agencies. I need a whole novel to cover all of the reasons, but the biggest one is the lack of consistency and care and the fact that you’re always at the bottom of the barrel when you book through an online travel agency.

✨ Look for added value. No surprises, travel is not as cheap as it once was, so finding ways to add value to your getaways is key. For example, working with a travel advisor is a great way to get access to better rates, promotions, extra perks, etc.

⏰ Give yourself maximum flexibility. Whether it’s booking the flex fare or refundable hotel rate or adding travel insurance (always have travel insurance!), give yourself lots of flexibility just in case things don’t go exactly as planned.

Looking to maximize your travel funds for an unforgettable adventure? Let me help:

✅ Don’t delay booking. Prices can fluctuate at the drop of a hat, so booking well in advance is necessary.

✅ Have a plan. Have a general idea of how much you want to spend each vacation day to stay on track.

✅ Don't be fooled by misleading promos. Inspect the small print for undisclosed fees and blackout periods.

One thing I like to keep tabs on is the always-changing travel trends.

And here’s one trend for 2024 that I wanted to pass on to all of you:

Guadalajara, Mexico, located in the state of Jalisco and also home to Puerto Vallarta, is expected to be a hot destination this year.

Why? Because it has a rich culture, delicious cuisine, beautiful architecture, and is the birthplace of mariachi music and tequila. It also has plans for seven new hotels in 2024.

Cliff divers in Mazatlan have been diving for generations. The activity became popular for spectators in the 1960's. Daring divers jump off a 45 ft cliff into shallow waters of only 6 ft deep. Twice a day spectators gather along the Malecon to watch divers. On days with rougher weather more experienced divers will take the leap. Cliff divers are not just in Mazatlan.
