1959 Les Paul Sunburst snakebite clean up. At some point a Bigsby B7 trem was installed on this guitar and holes were drilled in the top and side to secure it. I know, I know….. a small piece of flame maple is cut and shaped to fit the holes. Wood putty was in there so a 1/8th in. bit cleans out the p**p. The fill pieces are hide glued in and a tickle of tinted lacquer is drop filled in. Now it sits for a few days until I can do a better job of matching the grain. Carry on!

The joy of modified Harley ownership…. Since I lowered the bike, the rear tire actually wore through the wires to my right turn signal and brake light. The brake light and both signal wire sets come through one hole in the fender and where they bend to go along the sides was a wear point. The right signal wire set dropped a little and that rubbed as well. No right turn signal, no brake light. So up on the lift and the stock wires were yanked out. I made a new wire set and drilled a new hole to run them through, reducing the problem area for the other two sets. I made a little retainer clip washer out of steel to grab the wires right as they went into the turn signal bracket and eliminate that wear spot. All back together and we are good. Oh, and I’m gonna leave the stock paint for a while. I’m starting to like it. The Triumph chopper is mad because what time I have for bikes has been taken up with the Wide Glide. Some day…..

Yesterday’s Master Class on guitar repair that I gave at 6 String Ranch went incredibly well. Great attendees that were receptive and interactive and I didn’t get shot at. As a result, this is now an annual event at 6 String Ranch.

And then there were three. The Resurrection Burst has arrived for some mild improvements before joining its siblings in a client’s collection. This guitar started life as a gold top with dark back. It was eventually rattle can painted red and then stripped of all its parts. I have been in contact with the gentleman that purchased it 40+ years ago and stripped the paint off to find this beautiful top beneath. He sent me some cool photos of the process. The guitar was eventually sent to Kim Lefleur at Historic Hakeovers who did an amazing job of finishing this guitar in a proper faded Sunburst. John at installed correct parts including a 1959 harness(which we will replace with a 1958 harness) and the perfectly acceptable 1959 fret wire. The period correct Grover tuners will be replaced with original tuners. I love that Kim saved the original serial number and made a stinger out of the dark back color. My client is going to be completely thrilled. It’s amazing to think that two weeks after this guitar was created, The Sunburst finish became standard and if this top was matched right in the center, it could have been one of the very first ones. Progress will be posted.

Greg Platzer Guitars repair/restore/custom builds

For 40 years, Greg Platzer has been repairing and restoring guitars; at BCR Music and Sound for the past 25 and various other places before. Greg has occasionally built guitars by commission for local artists all the way to his most famous client, the late Walter Becker of Steely Dan. With a repair client base numbering in the thousands and rock stars sending their guitars to him(artists like Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Lita Ford, The Ho***rs, CSNY, KISS, Bon Jovi, etc.), Greg has seen it all and fixed most of it.

Greg Platzer Guitars custom instruments are built by hand, one at a time and to order. Any feature is available, the only thing he will not do is build exact clones of other makers’ instruments. Want a Strat style guitar with P-90s and a hardtail? Easy. A Tele style guitar with Dynasonics and a Bigsby? No problem. A maple over mahogany single cut with P-90s and a wraparound? DONE.

Only the finest material and parts are used.

All guitars have free adjustments for life.
