La grana cochinilla (Dactylopius coccus) es un insecto parásito del nopal. Del cuerpo desecado de la cochinilla hembra se obtiene el ácido cármico, colorante rojo.

El rojo cármico se convirtió en una fuerte competencia para los colorantes europeos, pues con él se teñía la ropa de reyes, nobles y del clero. Incluso se utilizaba para pintar artesanías y tapices. Como producto de exportación, salía del puerto de Veracruz hacia Europa entrando por España, y de ahí a distintos destinos; la grana llegaba a Rusia y hasta a la misma Persia.

This is what we live on our first tour this Monday!
We had the honor to take the famous musician from California Mariee Sioux to visit the CASA in San Agustin Etla Oaxaca and the Paper Factory. Later we enjoyed our Nixtamal Cooking Class where she learned how to cook the corn and to make her own tortillas! We enjoyed everything listening her beautiful music on Spotify, so please search her and don’t miss our next tours!
