Initially serving as an escape to the ocean and a hunting spot, many view Summer Haven as Florida's first summer beach resort. It was renowned in the early 1900s for its excellent fishing and simple lifestyle. What stands subtly at the corner of Mellon Court today was originally the entrance for Thomas Mellon's grand Summer Haven estate. Crafted from local coquina stone, this gate was meant to withstand the passage of time. Many famous guests, such as Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Marjorie Kinnan-Rawlings, passed through these gates to summer at the Mellon estate.

Thomas Alexander Mellon, an American lawyer, judge, and banker, was born on February 3, 1813, in Ireland and migrated to the United States in 1818. He played a pivotal role in shaping the banking and financial landscape in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Fascinated by the region and drawn to the ocean air, Mr. Mellon acquired property in Summer Haven, transforming it into the family's summer retreat.

Originally constructed in the 1890s as the Seacrest Inn, the estate stands as the oldest surviving building in Summer Haven. Its origins predate the existence of roads and automobiles in the area, when reaching Summer Haven required a day or two of river travel, meticulously coordinated with the tides.

Named the Historic Watermelon, the property pays homage to its roots, symbolizing the Mellon family's connection to the waterfront and coastal surroundings.
