Sea turtle nesting season begins May 1st in North Carolina. Nesting mother turtles use the moon, stars and breaking waves to find their way to nesting beaches. Hatchlings do the same to find their way to their ocean home. All too often they mistake artificial lights for the moon, stars or waves and crawl into the dunes, on to sidewalks and into streets where they die of dehydration, are taken by predators or run over by cars.

You can help save sea turtles by turning off exterior lights, closing window coverings and not using bright flashlights while walking the beach.

Hello all! As we head into the busy season on the island just some helpful information and to educate before your trip to the OBX:

🐢 May is the start of the sea turtle nesting season. Please keep all unneeded lights off on the exterior and interior of your home. Leaving lights on can interfere with direction of sea turtles and their hatchling. Please turn off lights when heading to bed.

⛱️ Please stay off the dunes. They help protect the island. Plus some of the unfriendly, native cactus, vines and reptiles makes these dunes their home. Not the friendliest ecosystem, especially for children.

🌞 During the summer be careful of the hot sand. Always bring shoes when walking from house to your beach spot. This hot sand will also burn the paws of our four legged friends.

⛺️ Please pack in and pack out daily. Canopies left over night will be removed by NPS on Hatteras Island.

🕳 Please make sure to fill in dug holes on the beach. Large holes are a hazard to people, emergency vehicles, as well as nesting sea turtles.

🗑 When placing garage out for pick-up please do so night before. In Avon trash pick up is Tuesday's and Friday's. They start picking right after midnight due to less traffic and heat in the summer. So please place out Monday and Thursday night on main roads. They do not pick up in driveways. Please place garbage in bags to help with flies.

🦀 Also by keeping exterior lights off it cuts down on bugs at the house. Additionally, we have some of the most awesome night skies on the east coast. Light pollution keeps others from enjoying this nightly show. (Turn off the lights, turn on the night!)

🐟 Please watch cross walks for bikers and pedestrian traffic. Cross walks are clearly marked. Please follow speed limits as the Dare County Sheriff's department will kindly give you a ticket if you don't.

🔥 Beach fires are a great activity at the beach. Please make sure you get a permit and make sure to fully extinguish your fire before leaving. No one wants to see a person injured the next morning if they step on a partially covered fire pit.

💣 Fireworks are prohibited. Fire, wind, and wooden houses are not a great combination. Please don't or as with speeding, the Sheriff's department will kindly give you a parting gift.

🔥 When grilling please do so on the ground level. Do not move grills to higher decks as embers will be carried by wind and as with fireworks, a tragedy may occur.

🐕 Kindly pick up after your pets. The OBX is a pet friendly beach so please when walking make sure you have pet waste bags. Hey, they need a vacation too! Also make sure your dog is leashed as each year we have numerous dogs run off from their owners.

🔦 When walking at night please bring a flashlight to make yourself visible especially along roads.

⏲️ Patience...most resturants and businesses are working as hard as they can especially during the summer. Please be understanding that it may take longer due to higher volume of visitors. Plan ahead, make reservations in advance if possible.

🌞 Sun is the friend in off season, not so much in the summer on vacation homes. During the cooler months, open blinds on east and south sides of homes to let the sun in. In the summer please keep the east and south facing blinds closed to keep sun out and house as cool as possible. Please keep windows and doors closed if heat or AC is running and needed.

Most importantly enjoy your time on the island. Be respectful to businesses and neighbors as you'll meet some of the nicest business owners and year round residents. Thanks all and see you at the beach... 🌴 🦀 🌞

We're sorry to see this starting up again already.

This hole had been partially filled in by the time our guy could get a photo, but he said it could have easily eaten an ocean rescue truck. Not only was the hole deep, it was also in the drive aisle on the beach, exactly where our first responders, and, until April 30, vehicles with a permit, drive.

This is not only extremely dangerous to those who dug the hole, but it is also a hazard for other beachgoers, emergency responders, and wildlife.

If you, or your friends, or your family, feel the absolute need to dig a hole on our beach, whatever you do, keep it shallow and FILL IT IN when you're done.

The Bodie Island Lighthouse will be open for climbing this year beginning Wednesday, April 26. Standing nearly 165 feet tall, the Bodie Island Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the third lighthouse to serve this area.

Climbing tickets go on sale at 7 a.m. and may only be purchased on the same day of your intended climb. Tickets are only available for purchase at www.recreation.gov/ticket/252034/ticket/10087143.

Pro tip: Tickets sell out quickly, so create your www.recreation.gov account prior to the date you intend to purchase tickets.

A climbing season at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is unlikely, due to restoration efforts.

Turned my basement at home into my little
Paint studio… dogs and kitty cat were not impressed but I am almost done. And I love love how it turned out! (Don’t mind the pics and lighting…. Not the best - I will post new ones once we are back at the beach)
We are adding this super cute small desk to the bunk bedroom at Bikini Bottom Island - Frisco NC - OBX, some of us that work from home or are stil working remotely always need a small area for our lap top! I know I know…. You should be relaxing and No one should/want to work when on vacation but if you must check on something… now you have a spot! No more laptops on the dining table yay!!!
