Kirby Bros. INC Since 1875 12/16/2015

In 1875, Kirby Bros. was established in Medford NJ. We experienced the ups and downs that naturally occur in life.

For the next 140 years, our family, business, and community changed with the ebb and flow of time. As a business and a family, we have enjoyed a legacy of serving the needs of an ever-changing community. From milling flour and livestock feed, then moving to selling pet supplies and chickens, we have always loved the adventure of our business and looked forward to the next road to travel. We are pr

ivileged to have had this experience and the stories to pass down through the generations. Reflecting on the past year, we are facing a new challenge. We have decided that it is best for us to close. 140 years is a fine round number. Our memories are invaluable to us. The personal and business relationships we have made are solid and long lasting. As of January 1st, the doors of Kirby Bros. at 67 North Main Street, Medford, NJ will be closing for good. As we move forward in this time of transition, we are still here to help. For our customers who get regular deliveries, Woodstown Ice and Coal can continue to provide them without interruption, if you so choose. To our walk-in customers, we will be able to direct you to other local small businesses that can supply you with your pet, wild bird, and small farm needs, as we have always done for you. It is difficult to time the announcement of closing with announcing our future plans. Due to the nature of our business, we owe it to you and your animals to provide you with the information that will help make this a smooth transition, while working on our business changes. Rest assured that your loyalty is appreciated. As we move forward, we will make every attempt to keep you informed of our progress in other areas. Normally during this season of reflection, we have been able look back with fondness on nearly every moment of our history. This decision was not made lightly and, while some small reservation may exist in some areas, we truly feel this is the best thing for us. We cannot thank all of you enough for the 140 years you have allowed us to be of service to this and surrounding communities. For more than six generations, we have lived in, invested in, and participated in this community with great benefit. The evidence of this surrounds us every day in our home and along many streets in town. We continue to believe that small family businesses are the backbone of our, and other, towns all over America. We look forward to closing out the year reminiscing with faithful friends and customers. We also look forward to all that there is to come. With Sincerity,

The Kirby Family

For now we are going to keep the page open and active. As we clean out and go through things we have lots of great items of local historical interest to share pictures of. Some items will become available for sale and others, as we are sure you will understand, will become keepsakes for our children and eventually grandchildren.

And who knows, for those who want to follow us in future endeavors what better way to stay in touch.

It's throw back Thursday! What a fitting day to share some more historical Kirby Bros. stuff as we head to closing out doors. The First is a snip from American Miller and Processor. A memory of a small fire that no one seem to be that bothered by.

We may or may or may not be on Action News tonight. There's some stiff competition because of Kelly and Cosby. If we make it in that will be quite a feather in our cap.

More than a decade ago, Kirby Bros. stopped blending corn, oats, and bran and topping the concoction with molasses to satisfy the cravings of horses that had long been part of the South Jersey landscape. The 100-pound bag of horse feed, priced at $13.60, was the biggest seller, said Chuck Kirby, who…

We cannot thank you all enough for your outpouring of love, support, advice and, let's be honest, job leads. We all have had moments in the past few days when we have had to let someone know about our closing. The pain we are about to cause and the worry that we are about to give has been proof beyond belief that we have been so very lucky to accomplish what we have accomplished. You are able to instantly know how valuable you are/were when you share with a loyal customer and friend that the time has come. If we could personally thank every single one of you individually we are sure there would not be adequate words to express it.

We want to share this message from Sarah Kirby because if anything good comes out of this it will be that our legacy will not only be one of perseverance but also an example to the world the impact small business has in the world.

If you are out and about stop in to say goodbye.

If I may...Yes. It's a difficult thing for us and for many people for many different reasons. But we (as a family) are in a good place with our current decision to close. I think it is natural curiosity to be anxious and wonder about the future of the property and the building but we need a minute to breath and decompress. Business matters are business matters and those are always sorted and worked out. Personally this is all new territory for us.

We appreciate all the support and good intentions but what is done is done. I feel I can speak for us when I say that if other people can do anything as we move forward is talk. Talk about Kirby's. Talk about what truly creates "value" in a community and an economy. Talk about what kind of town, state, country you want to live in. Talk about that cool new place you went to with your customers and neighbors. We all vote with our dollars over what we value every day. It is always a good thing to pause and reflect on what exactly you are voting to value. The saying "they don't make em like they used to" is a result of all of us collectively voting to devalue it.

The down side to our closing, from what people are telling me about how they feel, is a sudden rush of change. It was something that has always been here and it is easy to just assume that it always would be. If you think about the profile we have with our name and longevity and WE couldn't make it through, then what about every "new" place around that doesn't have that benefit. It isn't just money, it's changing the consumer habits of at least one generation. It's constantly finding ways to justify higher taxes instead of demanding a REAL explanation of where that money goes. New and shiny is all well and good but I have yet to speak to ANYONE who would say that they way their childhood town is now (not Medford specifically but nearly any childhood home) is in better shape today, in terms of a healthy local economy and a sense of community. This stuff doesn't come back. How many towns all over the US used to be a center of commerce and industry that are now ghost towns? The time to value a thing, a person, a moment, is when it is there and real and in front of you. Memories are nice but there are some things that can never be undone. Which I suppose is true of many things in life.
