While peak fall color has passed on Grandfather, our higher overlooks are still prime vantage points for autumn hues in the valleys below us. This photo of foliage along the Blue Ridge Parkway, taken a few days ago, is just one view that can be seen from the mountain.

Additionally, the Blue Ridge Parkway has now reopened from milepost 285.5, at Bamboo Gap, to milepost 305, near Beacon Heights. This opens up another route to our nature park from the Blowing Rock area.

We recommend you book your visit ahead of time at grandfather.com/tickets to guarantee entry, especially in this first phase of our reopening after Helene (while we’re selling a limited number of tickets).

Businesses & Restaurants in Blowing Rock are open and ready to welcome you back into town! Major routes into Blowing Rock are now fully open and are safe to travel.

The broader WNC community is still recovering from Hurricane Helene and impact to the area is significant. If you are visiting soon, we urge you to plan ahead and keep several things in mind:

- The Blue Ridge Parkway, local State Parks, and many local trails remain closed as damage assessments and repairs occur. A few major attractions are closed while they make repairs or direct their resources to relief efforts. Many fall festivals and events have been canceled- check our event listings for updates.

- Before traveling, check ahead with your lodging host. Many secondary roads are still under repair- full or partial closures are common. Stick to main routes and confirm their status before traveling. And please, respect the needs of our neighbors who have asked that visitors continue to stay away while they make important strides toward recovery.

- Shop and dine locally as much as you can- it makes significant impacts on the families who own our small businesses. Our shops, restaurants, and some of our local attractions are ready to welcome you!

All this to say: please visit thoughtfully. Visitors are crucial to helping our small businesses recover and your support means everything to us. If you are postponing an in-person visit, consider purchasing gift cards from our local businesses as a meaningful way to show your support at this time. If you are looking for additional ways to help, we hope you will contribute to one of the many organizations working to help those hit hardest by Hurricane Helene.

The spirit of the NC High Country is strong, and we stand together in support of those affected by this storm. We are deeply grateful to all those helping western NC- all the work, the contributions, and the kindness. Thank you to everyone who has reached out to support Blowing Rock during this difficult time. It has been heartening and overwhelming in the best way.

Due to ongoing impacts from Hurricane Helene and continuing emergency response operations, Watauga County, the Town of Boone, and the Town of Blowing Rock remain under a curfew from 7pm to 7am until further notice.

Local crews continue to work hard, and we are so grateful to all our emergency response teams. Blowing Rock was incredibly fortunate through the storm. Our water and wastewater plants are back online and power largely restored thanks to the hard work of Blue Ridge Energy. Town of Blowing Rock infrastructure is largely undamaged and operational. If you are seeking information about a particular business in Blowing Rock, please contact them directly about operations.

Town of Blowing Rock crews have begun assisting the Town of Boone with opening roadways and we remain dedicated to supporting recovery efforts with our neighbors. Please note that many areas in our region are still without power and over 100 roads in the county remain impassable. The Blue Ridge Parkway is closed to all public use. See road updates at DriveNC.gov

Here is the current statement from our Watauga County Tourism Development Authority:

Hurricane Helene passed through Watauga County on Friday morning, leaving a significant impact on our region and causing widespread damage to our community. At this time, travel conditions are unsafe, and a mandatory curfew remains in effect from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily.

Our top priority is the safety and well-being of both our visitors and residents. Emergency response teams, local authorities, and area officials are working tirelessly to address immediate needs, restore essential services, and begin the recovery process. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to these dedicated individuals for their efforts during this challenging time.

While the extent of the damage is still being assessed, we want to assure everyone that this impact is temporary. Watauga County is a resilient and close-knit community, and we are fully committed to rebuilding and welcoming visitors back as soon as it is safe to do so. In the meantime, we urge everyone to stay updated through our official county and town channels and those of local emergency management for the latest information on conditions, safety advisories, and travel restrictions.

We ask for your patience and understanding as we work to ensure that Watauga County can once again provide the safe and memorable experiences our destination is known for. We encourage those currently visiting to respect the curfew and follow the guidance provided by emergency officials to ensure your safety.

The spirit of Watauga County remains strong, and we stand together in support of those affected by this storm. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been impacted, and we look forward to welcoming visitors back to our vibrant community soon.

We first want to say thank you so much to everyone who has reached out with their kind words, love and support. Your kindness and generosity mean the world to us❤️

The Foscoe County, Sleepy Hollow community continue to demonstrate incredible strength and resilience during the aftermath. We are still safe and have plenty of supplies in our neighborhood. Still no power, but a good amount of people have been able to evacuate and most everyone else who has stayed in Sleepy Hollow have generators now which allows us to have access to our well water. Although the bridge connecting Sleepy Hollow is still not drivable, we have been so grateful for everyone’s safety along with everyone around that have continued to provide plenty of supplies for the residents within. If you are looking for specific directions/instructions/answers that directly impact this community please directly message us and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Right now there are still areas, especially in Avery County where it’s not safe to drive. We have posted ways to help donate and are currently compiling resources specifically by town for those who want to donate and for those who are trapped in these areas and need a hot meal, water and supplies. That will be posted as soon as possible. Other resource updates about Western North Carolina Hurricane Relief, latest conditions, and safety guidelines will continue to be reposted over our social media. Please spread the word!

We are also continuing to help at Mountain Grounds Coffee Shop to serve breakfast and lunch to those in the Banner Elk and Foscoe area. If you live in this area please come by and get what you need. We are trying to get back to everyone but we are still working with little to no internet. As we learn more we will continue to post what we can. Again, thank you for the unwavering support.❤️
