Yellowstone National Park's geothermal features are created by heat from a magma chamber deep underground. This heat is released through a process called convection, where hot magma carries heat upward.

How the geothermal features form

1️⃣Rain and snow seep into the ground.
2️⃣The water descends deep enough to be heated by the magma.
3️⃣The water turns into steam and builds pressure.
4️⃣The pressure forces the steam and water to the surface, creating geysers, hot springs, and fumaroles.

HOT SPRINGS
Natural outflows of hot water that collect in shallow depressions to form thermal pools

GEYSERS
Eruptions can occur on a regular schedule or only occasionally and/or unpredictably

FUMAROLES
Holes or cracks in volcanic areas that emit steam containing carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide

MUD POTS
Formed where steam and acidic fluids eat away at surrounding rocks

As we’re in the midst of a winter cold snap here in Yellowstone, it’s hard to imagine any creature preparing for Spring. But the deep series of nocturnal hoots ringing out from patches of forest throughout Yellowstone would indicate otherwise. Spurred by increasing daylight, Great Horned Owls are already starting to defend their nesting territories with loud hoots and even screams. Soon the female will lay eggs and incubate them through some of the coldest months of the year. Come spring, the owlets will have a head start at growing and by fall, learning to hunt on their own! 🦉

We were so excited to host some of The Bachelorettes from the show The Bachelor on one of our Private Yellowstone Tours!! They had so much fun looking for wildlife, and seeing Yellowstone draped in a fresh layer of snow!

Hi! My name is Adam Fahnestock and I am originally from Washington state where I was lucky enough to grow up in a home where I could watch nature and wildlife and learned to appreciate it from an early age. I graduated from Washington State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Ecology and a minor in Forestry. My wildlife career took me all over from Idaho to Michigan and I was fortunate to be selected to work five winter studies for the Yellowstone Wolf Project. Naturally, I fell in love with the greater Yellowstone area and moved out here as soon as the opportunity presented itself. Yellowstone is an amazing and wondrous office to work in. As your guide, I will share my passion of wildlife and the park, interwoven with factual information and humor while helping you experience the adventure of your dreams.

Howdy! My name is JR and I love using my outdoor experience to facilitate once-in-a-lifetime experiences for others. Originally from Pennsylvania, I made my way out west after the Marine Corps and I find it very difficult to consider leaving. It's tough to look back when you're constantly looking up (at mountains). As an experienced backpacker I recognize the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains and understand the dangers, which makes it such an exciting area to explore. In addition to working as a wildlife and park tour guide, I'm also an artist, photographer, and horseback trail guide in the summers, which makes the year very interesting. Living in Montana has allowed me to pursue the things I love doing, and helping people discover the grandeur of Montana, Wyoming, and Yellowstone National Park is just as rewarding.
