One of our favorite absurdly risky things in Boston is the annual First Night “early” fireworks show – hands down the most dangerous OFFICIAL things that happens in this city.
In a city that loves it’e rules and regs, the satire of the proceedings is magnified. Already hilariously – and freakishly – irresponsible, when contrasted with Boston’s contemporary penchant for being all about it’s policies, it is some weird farce that feels like something from a wilder version of Boston’s past.
The show is low. Like VERY low. Like, shooting explosives into 400 year old trees low. How we haven’t set the Central Burial Ground ablaze in all these years is some miracle we cannot fathom.
Meanwhile, folks get pithing yards of the firing point. Like, ridiculously close. Again, how a city like Boston who prides itself on fire safety – we were, after all, host to the first municipally funded fire brigade in the nation – continue to annually delight in this fire hazard is, well, awesome.
WE LOVE IT AND CONDONE IT ENTIRELY!
Then again, slabs, by nature, always love a bit of sanctioned mischief.
