One of our favorite shots of the Cherry Surf coastline: Big waves are breaking on two (or three?) sandbars, the SW wind is howling, the air is 70, the water is 70, sun is blazing and the rip current is ripping. It's just summertime fun at its best if you like being thrashed by the elements. Bring it on!

At Cherry Surf the sun says farewell every day, often in a myriad of colors, sometimes in high drama, sometimes not. Whichever mode it's in, you'll have a front row seat to witness.

Paddling in the time of summer magic. Some days it feels like you just have it all to yourself.

Michigan has really clean, medium gauge sand, that assumes a distinctive pattern worked by the waters of the shallows. Chicago has a super fine-grained sand that ends up sticking to you like its been glued on (annoying). Other places have sand that is heavy gauge, like small pebbles. Not a huge fan : )

Some nice sandbar action at Stan's Groins; a surf break visible from Cherry Surf. Surfers usually work the 1st bar, but sometimes venture out to the 2nd bar if it's worth the extra paddling. Both bars are breaking in this clip.

You hear plenty about the SUNSETS if you consider staying at Cherry Surf. Another phenomenon of nature you might be lucky enough to see (or survive) are the weather systems that roll across the open water and slam the coastline. This lightning might have foreshadowed thunder/rain/wind/waves ... or it might have kept rolling up the Lake somewhere else. In any case - quite a panoramic spectacle, and you'll be ideally situated to spectate.

The Lake has many moods. At times, opaque and mysterious, clouded with sediment or algae ... other times crystalline and inviting, like some grotto on the Cote d'Azur or cove in Tortola. Every day is a surprise, and conditions can change 180 degrees overnight.

Up on the Duck Lake dune ridge, it can get mesmerizing in the late afternoon with the sun lighting up the wind-whipped swell and every variation of blue-green hued water is moving, pushed by the NW wind.

This shot was taken right out front of Cherry Surf. Definitely not in February, tho. That's about 70 miles of open water til you hit Wiscsonsin. Big enough for you?

Some of the colorful beach denizens you might run into walking the shoreline of Lake Michigan near Cherry Surf ... that summer sun is ferocious. Everyone has their own way of covering up!

Things you may see from your Cherry Surf vantage point ... ... the lure of the big water is too much for this skipper, as he has commandeered his scow out the placid inland waters of White Lake, through the connecting channel, into the big lake for a memorable adventure, traversing the sandbars, fingers crossed that the conditions don't change : )

After months of mild, ice-free winter, we've entered the polar zone in February, and the ice is quickly building. A week ago there wasn't any. By the end of the month ... ... ? Stay tuned. We're on it. Starting to look like the Hudson Bay, eh?

Just about 800 yds south of us is Duck Lake State Park. One of our favorite spots there is what we call The Big Dune. Not a bad spot. Duck Lake connects to the big water there via a little sandy channel whose configurations can change overnight. Where wind-water-sand meet, the only thing that's certain is change.

We're thinking back to a glorious, summery October day when we hiked the beach @ Muskegon State Pk, and fell in love with the expansive dune environment as the trees began to show some color. If you like to get away from it all ... this is a pretty good spot.

A frosty coastline, mid-January, right near Cherry Surf. Nice to see a beach that actually features quite a bit of that sand material. Yes - the water is down almost a foot from its high of last Spring. Drought will do that. B-U-T-ful, in any case, no?

This is a summer wonderland / playground - IF you like blue water, hot sun, and sandy beaches. Where White Lake meets Lake Michigan, the channel, is just a little north of us.

WELCOME TO CHERRY SURF
On a sandy bluff overlooking the vast inland sea they call LAKE MICHIGAN, sits a special place, tucked in amid tall trees: CHERRY SURF … the perfect one-bedroom getaway for couples who don’t mind feeling just a little cut off from civilization, and who won’t mind trading all that in for the sounds of nothing but wind and waves, and tonight’s sunset.
