Quite a lot happening in the past two weeks, but time to get back to sharing this journey.

1001 Nights in Doha. OK, only 3 nights, but my suite was numbered 1001, a great way to start my journey. For such a small country, there far more to see and do than 3 nights can contain, but I got a great sampling. It is wonderfully easy to navigate, with an efficient, super clean metro system and ride-call services and taxis that never took more than 3 minutes to arrive.

Doha is home to great museums built by renowned architects, including IM Pei who designed the Museum of Islamic Art. A remarkable collection of art and artifacts that shows the expansion of Islam in the world. The curation is excellent. Now if only I could have taken home the ruby headdress…

The National Museum of Qatar’s design reflects a desert rose (look this up, an amazing natural mineral formation) and tells the history of this area. I recommend visiting when not overly tired or hungry so you can get the most from it…

Doha is known for shopping, from Souq Waqif, a maze of shops and restaurants frequented by locals and tourists alike. It comes alive in the evening and you’ll never feel harassed by merchants. There are also multiple malls with high-end luxury items. I might have visited the newest one, called Vendome, with ALL the luxury brands (Hermes, Dior, etc.).

Not far from Doha is an installation by artist Richard Serra, East West West East. A series of four enormous steel slabs, reaching a kilometer in distance from one another. Best visited at sunrise or sunset, it’s spectacular. And I had it to myself this visit. Read more about it at https://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/richard-serra-in-the-qatari-desert (https://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/richard-serra-in-the-qatari-desert (https://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/richard-serra-in-the-qatari-desert) (https://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/richard-serra-in-the-qatari-desert))).

Two other key parts of Doha – safe to walk just about anywhere any time of day or night (which I did and always felt at ease). Plus amazing luxury hotels at a fraction of the price in other parts of the world. I stayed at the Raffles, a landmark building on the Doha skyline. The place is pure luxury and a fabulous spot to rest and recover from jetlag while flying from the US to Africa or the Indian Ocean. Which was my intention with this stay, but I seem to have packed in so much, I may need another rest before the African adventure begins!

Time for more adventures around the world.

This edition involves conferences and exploration in Namibia and South Africa via Qatar. I transited Qatar en route to Tanzania in 2021 but was not allowed to enter the country due to pandemic restrictions. This time, I made it out of the airport and into the rapidly growing city of Doha.
Getting to Doha from SFO is easy (love direct flights) and pleasant as I was fortunate enough to fly in Qatar Airway’s Q-Suite. Plenty of space, privacy, good food and wonderful service. Even (finally) watched Guardians of the Galaxy. An excellent way to start the journey!

Departing soon from a BUSY SFO airport for Cancun for The Departure Lounge Annual Exchange, and to visit some amazing properties around the Riviera Maya. Excited to connect with colleagues and partners, and to be inspired with the best of travel opportunities for the year(s) ahead!
