At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is the highest point in Tennessee, and the third highest mountain east of the Mississippi. The road to access this view (can see 7 states on a clear day), is closed seasonally, but is now back open!

Accessible to all.

The parking area on top of Clingmans Dome provides one of the most amazing sunrise viewing spots in the eastern United States. The 7 1/2 mile access road is closed between November 30 and April 1 so if you want to visit, you must hike in.

In honor of the shenanigans that normally take place on social media on April 1, I waited a couple of days for this post 😁😂

This collection of sunrises featuring “The Dome Comb Tree” illustrate why this is a popular spot!

No matter what you ability to hike is, or if you can’t hike at all, you can enjoy this view. The only two limitations left are temporary weather related road closures, which you should check with a park before planning this trip, and the fact that sunrise happens pretty early in the morning😉
